I'm looking for people who will be traveling the TSE to exchange ideas about what to do, what not to do. To compare notes if you will. Maybe meet up for a beer or something. I'm not necessarily looking for a travel companion, just for someone to bounce some ideas off of.

Also, does anyone have the Lonely Planet for the TSE or a Russian phrase book (want to learn to decode the alphabet)?

The couple who started the Lonely Planet say in their memoirs that they made a long list when they were in their twenties of places in the world they wanted to go, things they wanted to do. They have done all of them to date except cross Siberia by train. Some things you can do equally as well as a senior citizen. Surprised

My nephew is planning to get married in Scotland next July, and I'm considering taking the train to London from Vladivostok since it's only a short flight from Seoul and it'd be a once-in a lifetime adventure. What a pity there's no train link through North Korea - it'd be great to get on the train in Seoul and get off in London.

I priced up the cost of the flights to London and compared it to the Trans-Siberian express, and the train works out a little cheaper if you can afford the time. I'm not sure about taking my one-year old baby on the train (he's due next week). What's the safety like for tourists in Russia these days?

I downloaded a documentary about the journey made in 1995. If anyone wants to see it, PM me and I'll give you the details.

I haven't done much research yet as I'm not going to be taking the train until next May/June, but I'd be game for a meeting of people exchanging ideas. I'd even try to research some more ideas to exchange before the time comes. So... if you arrange some sort of group, please put me on the list. Smile

Actually the longest route on the TSE is Pyongyang->Moscow.

How much are flights looking like to Vladivostock? Have you looked into visa info for Russia? I've only contacted Xanadu Travel and they don't do them. Another site had them going for about 70 pounds.

I think I'm going to do the Beijing->Moscow route instead. Cost-wise it's only a little more, about $100US, and I would get to see China and Mongolia too. No visa fees for Americans in Mongolia!

As for safety, I've heard conflicting stories. I was told by someone who was familiar with Russia but not necessarily with the train that Russians will try to get you drunk and pass out to rob you. Another person on this board said they were held up by train officials and extorted out of $500 to get their ticket back. She was travelling alone tho. The site that I've gotten a lot of info off of, http://www.seat61.com/Trans-Siberian.htm , makes it seem pretty safe but then they have a vested interest. Your luggage goes below under your mattress so no one can rob you in the night. And all the doors have locks on them that even the train porters can't open.
