Korea tycoon jailed for assault

One of South Korea's richest businessmen has been jailed after he was found guilty of carrying out a gangland-style revenge beating on bar workers who had scuffled with his son.

Kim Seung-youn, chairman of the Hanwha business group, was sentenced to a year-and-a-half in jail after he was convicted of assault.

Prosecutors said Kim and several bodyguards stormed into a Seoul karaoke bar in mid-March, seeking those he said were responsible for attacking his son.

Kim seized members of the bar staff, drove them off to a remote mountainous area and forced them to their knees while he beat them, they said.

"I ordered my bodyguards to take over because I got tired of beating them myself," Kim said during the trial.

Kim apparently punched and kicked the bar workers, beat them with a metal pipe and used a stun gun although none of the victims was seriously injured.

Appearing in court shortly after his arrest in May, Kim acknowledged he lost self-control and called himself a "silly father".

He said he regretted that he "failed to control impulsive emotion" and apologised for causing trouble

Prosecutors in the Seoul district court had sought a two-year prison sentence.

According to South Korean media Kim is the country's ninth richest man with a fortune of almost $1bn.

His Hanwha group was established in 1952 as the Korea Explosives Corp.

It later developed interests in petrochemicals, finance, insurance, construction and retail.

It also owns the Hanwha Eagles professional baseball team.

Agree - with 1 billion in his budget, he couldn't have got someone else to do the job. Even taking them scuba diving would have been a better option.

A country, in which a billionaire actually sees jailtime, definitely does not suck.

Ah, the day of national pardons.

I wonder which war criminals and Japanese collaberators Mr. No will pardon this year, while chastizing the Japanese.
