oneofthesarah's story reminded me of something that happened to me in the 4th grade.

So my family is from Jamaica, so I've missed many a memo about certain "bad" words and how I should feel about them.

So when I was in the fourth grade, I was talking to my Puerto Rican friend David. And for some reason the "N" came up. So he said to me, "What's up "n?"" and I replied back, "What;s up, "n?"" And we started laughing. And we just kept saying it back and forth, laughing down the hall and a teacher overheard us. She read us the riot act, talked about how wrong the word was and how inappropriate we were and blah blah blah.

And that's the day I learned to not like the "N" word

That shit still cracks me up because fast forward a decade and I still jokingly say it but it annoys me when "Whites" that I don't know say it but it infuriates me far more when "Blacks" say it. Confused

Am I a racist? Absolutely, but I hate everyone equally.

P.S. Swetepete, that Black like Me comic strip was HILARIOUS!

I saw this film recently and found it really shocking. I'd heard about the MOVE case before, but the details of what happened are almost unbelievable.

Anyway, I'm posting it here since it seems related to the topic of this thread and I don't know where else it might fit.

(Warning: Very disturbing subject matter)

Before I get to my point, I am aware that the whiteys around the world haven't historically been an oppressed people but still...

Why is it ok for there to be Asian pride, black pride, native american pride but not white pride?

Why is it ok for minority based scholarships to exist but not for a scholarship for whites? Oh, poor whites is ok but everyone can apply for those-so long as they're poor...

Aren't quotas for college admissions based on race, racist?

Anyway, there are tons of double standards when it comes to race but I can't complain because I am white, right? I, by virtue of my skin tone, must have had all the luxuries of growing up white e.g money, tutors, private boarding schools...

You answered your own question in your first sentence. There is no need for a white pride organisation.

Are quota's racist? Only in the most literal, pedantic, and petty kind of way. They are positive steps towards redressing the abuses of many many years.

I agree but see a flaw in it. White pride is ridiculous. I feel no kinship with a Russian person who doesn't speak English or a random French person. The idea of us all uniting doesn't make sense to me.

On the other hand, there's no problem with having pride in your country/culture of origin. People from Poland should be proud of where they're from, and they don't deserve criticism for "Polish pride" unless they're using it to bash immigrants.

White supremacists always whine about how they're not allowed to celebrate their roots. Well my family has celebrated Ukrainian Christmas all my life, and I have a scarf that matches my family tartan, and nobody's accused that of racism.

I think why Black pride in the U.S. and other countries with large numbers of slave decendents works because those people don't have a country to look back at as the "old country" or "mother land." I'm not saying it's right or wrong but you can't deny that most White or Asian people can talk about where they are decended from and Blacks (those not directly from Africa or with direct ties to an actualy African country) can't do the same.

Question: Wasn't it a political statement at first before it was a social one....or was it the other way around?

I don't like Korean men (not gyopo, but Korean)....simple as that. When I meet them, I judge them right away as being jerks. They have to do alot of work for me to befriend them as far as im concerned. I am nice to them, I am polite to them, but I won't trust them and I am not going to hang out with them.

Why you ask? It is because in my experience here, they don't like me....I make more money then them (a good number of them at least), I don't work as much as they do, I date their women, I don't live at home with my mom and dad like they do and I don't have to do crappy military service. I would hate me too if I am a Korean guy, and that is the vibe i have received from most....

I have had enough Korean guys ask me my age right off the bat to find out if they can talk down to me or not....I have had enough Korean guys give me the "18" under their breath....I have seen Korean guys be my friend one second and then when their boys come along they change their tune.

Do i think i am better than them, not in the least....so my answer is no, according to the OP, I am not a racist...I just dont like Korean guys!

You may have misunderstood my previous post. If The Bobster's remark was serious, then he holds "essentialist" views that patronize women by elevating us to the status of angelic beings. (Too good to work outside the home, possibly too good to get involved in business or politics, etc.) The alternative is that he's satirizing the views of his opponents in some of the misogyny threads by utterly mischaracterizing what we've said.

The Bobster does in fact have a wife. At least 2 people posting on this thread have met her, and I'm confident they will nod their heads in silent agreement with what I say here. She is active in business and politics and very well-educated. She is smart and strong and brave and generous and funny and kind and open-minded - in short, Bramble, she is everything YOU are not. She is not an angelic being, either - she eats and shits and has sex and farts and vomits when she is ill.

Although we don't always agree, I value her opinion and seek it out because I'm not an idiot and I know my life is better off that way. I will never ask YOUR opinion about anything important, though, because you have not only shown yourself to be consistently wrong, but also mean-spirited, hypocritical and close-minded.

If there's anything else you'd like to know, just calll me up. I agree with 'fly, though, about seeking professional advice ... think about it.

Cool

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

I was polite to you in other threads while you spread around hatred. Get a life. Seriously. And gow up. How old are you, anyways?

I hate white, aging-hippy threadjackers who smoke and post insults along with irrelevant nonsense about their spouses, mothers and dogs as a substitute for actual arguments. Does that make me a racist? Rolling Eyes

Blacks have reclaimed the word by taking it on as an affectionate term, thus neutralizing its power....No, we've taken something that is racist and stripped it of its power by mocking it and making it ridiculous.

Ah, how convenient: if you appropriate a racial slur it's o.k. to use it on whim. How very unwittingly PC of you. For someone who once had a black boyfriend, you seemed to have miss the fact that sometimes blacks do NOT use the word nig-er as a term of endearment. It can be used as a put-down, too. And so what if cartoons during the war caricatured the Japanese? That's the least they deserved at the time.

Some of the most narrow-minded, bigoted people I've met are American black men. They love to seek out white trophy girls and brag about it to the homeys but if they catch a sista with a white guy, they can't deal with it. Then there are those Afrocentric blacks who think they have a kinship with Africans who in the main find them decidedly American and who often look down on browns and yellows, and I ain't talkin' Crayola here. I love the scenes in Rush Hour where Chris Tucker's character reveals his utter ignorance of Chinese, but that's rare for Hollywood.

--------

Here' another take on the situation: in Hawaii, locals joke about ethnicity and race all the time and rarely take umbrage. The mainland is more PC and more uptight, same as Western Europe. Frank de Lima, a local standup comic of Portuguese extraction, jokes about everyone except of course blacks. Some local blacks from the Army base at Schofield and the Marine base at Kaneohe. Anyhow, that's just taboo because we know how defensive some blacks get. But of course it's o.k. for Eddie Murphy to make a white joke.

And here's a NEWS FLASH: many if not most stereotypes are based in fact, exaggerated characteristics of various groups. Anyone who's read social psychology would know that.

For me, personally, I'm prejudiced against anyone who believes that PC is the wave of the future.

Racist tendencies, IMO, mean either:

a) we are all still unevolved monkeys, with a lot to learn about "getting along" and "harmony and love" and whatever
b) there are very real differences between humans of different shades and geographical orientations, that we can lump into basic generalizations.

I vote for the latter. Skim through history and prove me wrong:

* Black people are physically adept (dance, sports, fighting, etc) but lack the skills for higher forms of thought (ie social organization).

* Asians are emotionally retarded but extremely obedient -- hence my love of their women. Cool

* Whites are cold and logical and masters of weaponry. That's why they rule -- ask D1ck Cheney.

* Indians... um, dunno. Haven't cooked up a line for that one. Mebbee irrelevent in the overall scheme?

***************************

Would it make me racist to approach a person I've never met before with such preconceived notions? If I assume blackie can do some wicked power dunks and do the moonwalk like no other, am I a bad guy?

If so, I guess I'm racist, 'cause I'll assume so until he shows otherwise.

But then you've got morons like white power groups or whatever who take the whole "generalization" thing too far.

Gotta factor in the idiots, I guess. Rolling Eyes
