Well anyways a friend that is phillipino quit her teaching job because the boss was trying to underpay her, and now he is threatening to call the police on her, so i know the penalty for her would be 5k and deportation if she is caught teaching illegally but what about the hagwon? how much do they pay?
thanks |

Not as excessive as the person getting caught working illegally.
And no one on this board can give you a correct answer. Why? Because penalties vary depending on the circumstances; from a slap on the wrist to jail and deportation for the worker and fines for the school.
Losing a business license almost never happens and would not matter; they just open up in the same location under another name or change the owners name. |

The police are not the proper authority to call in this matter. Matters concerning pay would be an issue for the labor board to deal with but your friend doesn't have a leg to stand on due to the fact she worked illegaly. Your friend should cut her losses short and leave the place of employment. The risks heavily outweigh anything your friend percieves as a one-up on the boss or any gain. |

If she is married to a Korean, then its not illegal. If shes not, then she has problems and may be better off just leaving the country as it is more trouble for her than the hagwon. |

It all depends on HER visa status.
It can range from:
a fine for the hakwon and nothing to her (SOFA status) to
a fine for her and one for the hakwon (if she is unqualified and F2 or F4) to
a fine for her and one for the hakwon (if she is F3) to
a fine for the hakwon and detention/deportation for her (if she is here illegally or on an entertainers / industrial worker visa).
The fine for the hakwon will usually be equal to or greater than the fine to the worker (often in the 1-2 million won range for each of them). |

yea shes married to a teacher and is here on that visa, but i also found out the boss was calling her threating to "kill her" if she didint return to work and is now harrasing her with text messages at 1am saying how he is going to have her in jail and show her how "hot" korea can be, whatever the *beep* that means. I want to go to the school and kick the shit out of him but he is the kind of guy that would sue for assault and get a fake doctor to write extra damages and shit, any suggestions? |

Just go and have a word with him. You don't have to be violent. Most hagwon owners are cowards. When you meet them face to face they lose the ability to bully and then things get accomplished. Don't get the crap out of him. Just go and talk to him. |

Omg, this is the second time in less than a year I have heard about two death threats! The first was the Ilsan hagwon and now this! God almighty you would think these people would realize it's just a business and not worth making such serious threats!
Anyhow the reason I'm posting is because in Canada or America (I've lived in both) a death threat is serious and you can notify the police about it. A man made a death threat to a co-worker in Canada once and the police came and he spent a week in jail. Not sure what it's like in Korea but I would assume they take these threats seriously as well? I would notify the police asap. BoL to you and your friend.

the only problem with the notifying the police thing is that we would probably have to have proof that he said that because the text messages he sent were just threating jail, and secondly since she doesnt have the visa for work it would probably just make more problems for her. My korean friend said that its normal in korea for the men to talk to women like that, but i think the guy is the biggest *beep* in the world |
