My Visa expires on the 13th of July, which is a Friday, and my contract finishes on the 18th of July, which is a Wednesday.

Three months ago I asked my school when I can leave. They said on the 1st or 30th of June. I chose the former. I was under the impression for several months that I would have three weeks off between a summer camp job or another contract.

However, they can't find a new teacher so here I am now. I told them I will leave the 13th and go to Japan for the weekend. However, I assume that I'm legally obliged to stay for three more days at my current school.

Do I have to extend my visa? Can I choose not to? And just leave on the 13th?

But if I do, will I loose my bonus and flight money.

I'm a bit out of touch but it used to be simple to get a couple of weeks extra from immigration. From memory you could get it done in one trip to immigration. The fine is per day for an overstay and not cheap. So get yourself to immigration and get it fixed!

You can get your VISA extended to cover those extra few days with no problems. Just take your contract and passport with ARC down to immi with the school's license. They will extend it to the last date. I think the fee is 30,000. Beyond that, you can extend it free of charge for up to 30 days if you can show you have a ticket out of the country. You cannot work during that time.

What about this.

My Visa in my passport says June 28 but my Alien Card says July 13. My school told me the latter is the correct expiration date.

Is the passport or the Alien Card correct?

are you sure the date in your visa isn't when it was issued?

I would get the severance pay and airfare before you extend your visa to June 1st. Tell her that you have no problem going to immigration to extend your visa to August 1, 2007 but you want monies for airfare and severance wired into your bank account on July 9th, 2007 so you can extend you work Visa on July 10, 2007. If she doesn't bite, then extend your visa to July 20, 2007. You may need a day or two to deal with getting money owed to you.

If you quit then you loose out on severance and airfare. Yes, you have to extend your visa. If you work without an E2 Visa it is illegal then Immigration can slap fines on you and the works. Be on the safe side.

Your exit date is the date on your ARC.

If your ARC says July 13 then that is the final date you can be in Korea without gettiing an extension or change of status.

ARC says July 13 so that is when you have to exit or extend before.

Cheapest way is 30k for a contract extension. 30 minutes and a few documents at the immigration office and you are good as gold.

If you have an exit ticket to show immigration for the 19th or so you can get the FREE extension but technically it is illegal to work on it. It would save you the trip to Japan on the weekend unless you were going anyway.

Last option is take the trip to Japan, come bank on a tourist stamp, finish your last 3 days illegally and then move on (but standing on the moral high ground I would advise you choose the 1st option).

Your visa date in your passport is the one you get fined on. I spent eight and a half years in Korea and this is old school stuff. Get down to immigration and get it done. Nobody is going to be checking what you are doing for two weeks or whatever.

No, you don't get fined according to the date in your passport. That date is the validity of the ENTRY VISA, not your period of sojourn. If you look at the VISA, it will say something like "period of sojourn 1Y." That means you can stay for one year after you enter. The VISA expiry date just means that you can't RE-ENTER the country after it expires, but if you're already here you'll be cool.

Hello The_Conservative I'm just taking a peek on the board. I'm a teacher trainer in China these days. Seems some laws might have changed with the visa stuff.

My visa expires and I finish my job on Friday. So, I bought a one-way ticket to Japan. Of course immigration is closed on both Monday and Tuesday. So, I'll be hanging out in Japan until Wednesday or Thursday.

But, first I have to show immigration my ticket to get the extention. Can I choose how long I want to extend for.

For example, instead of buying a ticket for this coming Saturday can I buy a ticket for next Wednesday, although I will not be working on Monday or Tuesday?

Thanks
