Apparently Russia's warmest city has won the bid.

Just finished watching the live coverage on KBS. Needless to say, after the winner was announced the silence from the presenters was deafening. The people of Pyeongchang looked absolutely gutted. A lot were crying. They had a couple of suits on afterwards for a post mortem and there was a lot of teeth sucking and head shaking. Poor bastards.

Just watched a CNN special on PyeongChang today, it showed the city getting ready with bulldozers and tons of equipment. The city actually believed they would win (no doubt) and Roh even promised the country they would win. The samsung ceo was at the vote and I am sure he brought tons of hidden cash for bribes.

sorry PyeongChang, maybe you can build a massive English winter camp for the kiddies! Wink

Pyeongchang lost the vote because Kim Jong il secretly changed the voting ballots from Pyeongchang to Pyeongyang.

Koreans shouldn't be blasted for expressing disappointment that Pyongchang didn't win. If the UK lost out in a comparable situation British people would be upset too. I was in the car with two colleagues when the announcement was made and the only thing which slightly annoyed me was their strong criticism of Sochi for not already having the facilities in place.

What actually happened was that the korean voter got mixed up and thought that SOCHI actually meant SOJU.

I am a little suprised that the Russian city won. As long as Korea deals with losing gracefully (unlike World Cup 2006) then we can leave it at that. Try again next time and perhaps develop the place first. Build some facilities anyway that can be used for training future Korean winter Olympians. That way next time they will be sure to win.

What I found sorta amusing is that Putin went ahead and did his presentation in English. Roh did his...in Korean. I dunno, just seems that if you're addressing the world you might wanna give English a go, especially when the person speaking before you does.

Doesn't the Korean president speak English?

Speaking only in Korean when you're in a tight race with a country whose president gives his first-ever speech in English (with French and Spanish included as well) is... foolhardy.

"It's almost like being stabbed in the back," Pyeongchang development director Jeon Yong-kwan said.

"I don't get it. We have worked for years to improve our previous bid. We did everything the IOC asked of us. It wasn't just a show."

This is when Koreans annoy me; when they can take their reaction beyond feelings of dissapointment to the the blame game. This decision calls for introspection not casting aspertions on others.

"I don't think they can build all the venues in the time they have though they say they can," he said.

Russia's economy is booming. It's also worth noting that the Koreans had to build largely from scratch when they were awarded the olympics. It's hardly a decision without precedent.
