I was thinking of upgrading my 6800gs to a 8600GT or a 2600xt. The main object is to play Oblivion. I also have a AMD A3000+ for a CPU so I don't think I'd get benefit from a meatier card. I'd also rather have a DX10 part, though I may yet go the x1950.

Anyone have either of the cards above? How playable is Oblivion?

Is your card AGP or PCI-E?

You shouldn't buy a mid-range DirectX 10 card for gaming as they appear quite rubbish even by comparison with last gen mid range. Check out Hard-OCP and Anandtech for reviews.

Buy an ATI Radeon x1950xtx and have HDR and AA in Oblivion.

Yeah, get the 1950XT. That seems to be the best card around the 200,00 won range. Even though its directX9, you won't see games that NEED Dx10 for a good year or 2. By then the REAL midrange DX10 cards will out and you can upgrade again/

The card is PCI-x

I know that the current Dx10 cards are kinda crippled, but I don't want to put down for a X1950XT either. If I'm going to spend 200,000 or more, I'd rather just get the GTS8800 for 300,000 and know I've got a good card. So it's a x1950pro vs a x2600 or 8800GT I guess. Or I may wait a bit.

ETA: The other thing is that I understand the high end x1900 cards are nuts on the power. I've got a Korean 450W power supply here. The guy said it was the best Korean brand but who knows. I'm not sure what the ratings on the rails are as well.

Thanks for the info so far, I was already leaning towards a x1950, but was thinking of putting Oblivion in the closet for a few months and skipping the generation.

You will need a DX10 card and be running Vista to play DX10 games.

However, Oblivion is a DX9 game so spending big on DX10 stuff to play Oblivion is a bit of a waste.

Of course, Oblivion will play very well on DX10 cards and Vista. So you could play the game happily while waiting for DX10 games to come out.

If you have a monitor of 22inch or smaller then an 8800 GTS 320MB would be the best way to go DX10. They're going for around 300,000 in Yongsan.

I'll be waiting for a few good looking DX10 games to be released before I buy a DX10 card. They'll be better and cheaper by then anyway. I guess around early 2008.

If I were you, I would probably get nVidia 8800 GTS. Depending on your monitor and the resolution you use, the 320MB version might be enough for you.

As for 8600 series, well, it seems to be little bit too weak at the moment. I have head rumors that nVidia might launch an addition to the series. The main problem with 8600 GT and GTS is the narrow 128-bit memory bus. I hope that the rumors are true and 8600 GTX (256-bit bus and 512 MB memory) will come out soon. You can always wish, right?

If a $200 X1950 XT is out of his range, then why would a $300 8800 GTS make any sense?

Get a DX9 card for now. By the time the exclusive DX10 games come out, you will be able to get a 8800GTS for around $150 or less.

Well technically I've got the $$ to buy an 8800Ultra, it's just a matter of price performance. What I said was that if I'm spending 200,000 or more for an XT which isn't all that much better than a pro, then I'd may as well pay another 100,000 and go GTS. The only thing I'm worried about is whether my CPU will bottleneck it and whether my PSU can handle it.

I'm also thinking of buying a second computer when the quads become mainstream so I don't want to splash out too much right now.

It seems everyone is saying x1950 or 7900GS. I suppose I must concurr.

The 7900GS is supposed to overclock really well, if that helps you decide.

There's website I remember seeing of a link on a tech discussion here that compares the performance and specs and price rather nicely of video cards on a bar chart...anyone have a link to this site.

Around the $150 price range, go with a 1950 Pro or a 7900GS. The 7900GS is the better overclocker, but right out of the box, the 1950 Pro trumps it in generally all benchmarks.

At the $200 price range, its the x1950 XT hands down.

At the $250 price range, its still a DX9 card, and you are so close to the $300 that you should just get the 8800.

There you go. Its all up to you OP.

Hi,

I have the BFG 7900GTX (stocked OC) and oblivion runs max smoothly. Therefore, your 8600GT should play it just fine. Keep in mind, though, I do have the E6600 processor and 2 gigs of ram to back it up. Remember, all of these play an important role in game play.

I would were I single. I do have to justify it to my wife. I'm on a limit when it comes to PC spending and I want to save my pennies for a penryn or Barcelona next year. I should be able to put a next gen card in it too.
