I am reluctant to buy anything in the markets because I fear that any bag I buy there will fall apart within 3 months.

Can anybody recommend a good place to buy one?

There are good, and expensive, places to buy bags all over Seoul. Here are some choices:

Namdamun market has official retailers on the street that runs from Seoul Station towards Myeongdong

Dongdaemun Stadium has official stores

There are tons of stores near the Bukhansan Baegundae hike in Uidong, near the Buddha bus pickup.

Suraksan station near the mountain entrance has a few.

You mean just a regular school-type book backpack? Try Costco.

I've had a LeCaf pack (cheesy Korean brand, even says "Mt. Gumgang" on the back!) for about 7 1/2 years now. Bought it from some generic department store and use it all the time, cycling, hiking, travelling, etc. The only thing wrong with it is, one of the bungee straps on the side mesh pockets has lost its elasticity, and the nylon mesh covering the back padding is wearing thin in one spot. I kinda wish the damn thing WOULD fall apart on me so I could justify buying a new one.

I bought a great Alaska brand backpack for 5000 won in the market.
It's a great small backpack.

I also bought a slightly used Lowe Alpine Countour III 70+15 for 40,000 won from a post on the Buy and Sell forum.

I was just at the Lotte store at Lotte world. I wasn't looking at backpacks
but they had a big selection. I bought some rain covers there. They have various sizes. I found out yesterday that water resistant doesn't mean water proof. I think I ruined by electronic dictionary, and I had to throw away some maps and a phrase book.
