I agree with the fact that Incheon getting the 2014 games probably killed Korea's chances. C'est la vie.
That and Putin is much classier and a lot more charismatic than Roh. |

It's funny, Koreans think that hosting international sporting events makes them look good in the eyes of the international community, when in reality it has frequently had the exact opposite effect due to a lengthy history of questionable decisions and extremely poor sportsmanship. |

I recall having a good impression of the country during the Seoul Olympics, as a developing, modernizing nation.
And I was impressed like hell at the public support, the sea of red, for their team in World Cup 2002, and the quick construction of facilities including a scenic stadium on Jeju Island.
Those two big events left me with no doubt that they could handle a Winter Olympics and that funding and public support would be there in spades. |

They lost the bid because of Apollo Ohno, the judges are fans of Dancing with the Stars. |

And another boost to the extreme nationalism and all the crap that comes along with it. Good on you for supporting that.
I hear that Iranian extremists really love their country, too, just like Mussolini loved his. Go, Thunderg**ks! |

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea (AP) -- The citizens of Pyeongchang reacted with quiet shock Thursday as their city failed in its bid to win the 2014 Winter Olympics, reliving the bitter memories of a disappointing defeat four years ago...
But when International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge said the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi would host the games, the crowd reacted with stunned silence.
One or two people threw flags, emblazoned with "Pyeongchang 2014," onto the ground. |
Did it look anything like this?

I like Korea and Koreans, but when these situations come up, I find some of their reactions really disappointing. I realise what I think of Koreans means nothing, but why do a lot of them have be such petulant children?
I can understand people with business interests getting upset, but why are the hosting rights such a big deal others? I would suspect extreme nationalism, image, and their reaction often resembles extreme victim mentality. Whose fault is it going to be this time? |

Samsung regrets failed Olympic bid
Aides to Samsung Group chairman Lee Kun-hee yesterday expressed regrets over PyeongChang's failure to win the right to host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
Lee, who also serves as a member of the International Olympic Committee, has been one of the staunchest promoters of the Korean city's second bid for the Winter Games. As a major corporate sponsor, Samsung is also closely linked to the Olympic Games.
"Chairman Lee did everything he could until the last minute," a senior executive said after the IOC gave the 2014 Games to Sochi of Russia.
In the days leading up to yesterday's IOC vote in Guatemala City, Lee aggressively promoted PyeongChang, which also lost to Vancouver four years ago.
Lee said that PyeongChang's hosting of the 2014 Olympics would help Korea gain economic development momentum, facilitating its goal of achieving $30,000 GNP per capita.
"It is a pity that his efforts didn't bear fruitful results," the executive said.
Lee began promoting PyeongChang's bid as early as 2005 when he met IOC president Jacques Rogge and former IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch.
In April last year, when Seoul held the general assembly of the Association of National Olympic Committees, Lee invited IOC members to a banquet to indirectly promote PyeongChang in the international sports community.
In February this year, when the IOC's evaluation team visited PyeongChang, Lee was in the media spotlight for checking equipment and slopes, and skiing himself in advance.
However, PyeongChang's second failure in hosting the Winter Olympics put Samsung officials into deeper disappointment.
"As much as we feel sorry, Korean people would feel sorry too. But we think that it was meaningful to do our best until the last moment," a Samsung official was quoted by Yonhap news agency.
When reached on the phone by The Korea Herald, a Samsung spokesman declined to give an official comment.

Now let's wait for the conspiracy theories to start....... |
I got to hear a few of them during my teacher's class yesterday. The teachers told me that they had heard that Putin had both bribed Guatemala with billions of dollars and that he had threatened Guatemala with cutting off their oil supplies. Does Guatemala get its oil from Russia? And that thousands of Russians had flown over there and there presence was what influenced the decision.
Overall, I don't care one way or the other because I don't even watch the olympics. |

Um ... so the Samsung exec wined and dined the IOC members and tried hard to promote the city. Big fukin deal. Everyone does. Where do you get bribes (cold hard cash exchanging hands) out of that? |

What a bitter lot. All those basking in schadenfreude right now, I bet you have no ties to Sochi or Russia whatsoever. But hey, they're facing Korea, those evil racists who make my life miserable here in Korea because they speak funny English and whine and stare at me funny because I'm with one of their girls. So what the hey, I'm going for Sochi!
You people are the saddest people in the world. You've heard it before, but it's the most simplest of all advices: go home. Not for Korea's sake, but for your sake. You'll notice your happiness goes up. Everybody wins. |
Interesting point. |
