Seoul Metropolitan Police arrested two Canadians for working as English instructors with a fake bachelor�s degree and booked seven other foreigners and Koreans either on the same charge or for employing them. To work as an English instructor, foreigners have to get an E-2 visa permitting them to teach English in Korea. The visa is granted to applicants who have either a BA from universities in English-speaking countries or an English-language diploma from universities in non-English speaking countries.
Of the arrested Canadians, one studied only at an adult education center affiliated with a college after finishing high school. While working part-time in a fast food restaurant in Canada, he bought a fake U.S. bachelor�s diploma for US$300 on a U.S. website in August 2003. He came to Korea at the end of that year and started working as an English instructor for a private language institute in Songpa-gu, Seoul. The other graduated from a Canadian junior college and then worked in a factory. He came to Korea on a tourist visa in 2001 and paid US$500 to a Korean broker to buy a fake Canadian bachelor�s diploma in August that year. He worked as an English instructor at a language institute in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province since January 2004.
Meanwhile, police have arrested an Australian English instructor who made headlines last month by telling his Korean ex-girlfriend he was infected with the AIDS virus when she broke up with him. |
Did this guy actually have aids? Why was he arrested? |

| This has been discussed here before. Someone even found a letter the guy wrote about his ex-girlfriend. It was never confirmed whether his AIDS e-mail was real or false, or whether he had AIDS. |

Nor does it matter. She said he did it, so he'll be tarred and feathered. |

Who cares that it was discussed before. I am interested on what he was charged with and whether he really had AIDS. |

Ok, my wife heard on the news about this... (keep in mind that this is from her memory and translated):
The Aussie apparently was arrested for having a fake degree and applying for an E2... AND working while the application was being processed.
The AIDS bit is not a charge (so far as she could tell). |

I wonder if there was any proof that he was working while the visa was being processed. Or whether he was just booked based on rumors. |

It demonstrates how lazy Korean immigration is. They must not even bother calling the universites where the students said they attended. With Australian universities there is no excuse due to the fact that immigration officers could call Australian universities during working hours. |

It demonstrates how lazy Korean immigration is. They must not even bother calling the universites where the students said they attended. With Australian universities there is no excuse due to the fact that immigration officers could call Australian universities during working hours. |
Are there not private information laws in OZ? |

I don't know about OZ but in the US you can call a university and ask for example if Bob Walk graduated from Harvard. Whether someone graduate from a university is not private information. Not to mention that many universities publish list of their graduates.
A university would not offer more information than whether you graduated. They might tell someone who called your major but that is about it.
If I am wrong, someone please correct me. What would the point of graduating be if there was no way to prove it? Everyone would just buy fake diplomas for $300 and apply for a job. |

There are people in Korea that can speak English. So your point is moot. It is basically another example of the Korean government playing lip service to an issue. If they really carried they could contract the work out to another agency or hire a part time worker who spoke English well to do it. They could probably find some house wife to do it from home part time.
