What diacretic(those symbols used over words for pronunciation,) would you believe is the correct one to use over this word: CARROTS

Today, yet another quandary. I said it sounds like carrETS, with a sort of short vowel sound over 'E.' Another guy at work said the same.

Teachers here want me to teach it as a 'U', or like carrUTS.

I opted out and told them maybe it was a matter of dialect, seeing the guy they'd asked for for advice was from Australia(British English.)

Talk about being particular.
