What did you learn during the GEPIK orientation? I was also wondering what teachers actually did during orientation etc. etc.

You will probably learn valuable things, like that Korea has four seasons and that Americans use forks and knives, but Koreans use chopsticks. You'll learn about Korean traditional dancing or music, or some traditional art form your average Korean stopped paying attention to decades ago.
At some time, you'll probably have a Q&A session with a few 'Q's and no 'A's.
After that, they might teach you some valuable linguistic knowledge, like that in English, it's SVO, but in Korean it's SOV.
You'll probably watch a video of high school students speaking English. You may learn valuable things like Koreans have 10-minute breaks before class, but Americans only have 5.
And, after all that excitement, if there's still time, they may have a lecturerer come in and quickly teach you a teaching skill or two. Don't expect too much though. |

I would hope this doesn't last more than five days. |

It's not a complete waste, you can make contacts with other teachers. Hopefully make some friends as well.

Def. will be lots of drunk "teachers" stumbling about. The last one was frustrating because the topics were good, but many of the actual lectures weren't.
You will get some resource ideas and tips from the lectures, and of course you will get to meet the rest of the GEPIK group.
Last year's had fire extinguishers set off.
This year's had passed out teachers decorating the hotel lawn and roadside, and a golden shower incident.
Who know's what you'll be in for. |

Bet you won't want to be missing that!
My school always gives me the choice of going but I always decline decline as working would be preferable to that sort of nonsense. |

I believe they are held a month or two after the beginning of each new term. And, not everybody attends as there are waytoomany teachers for the venue to support. |

wow !Isn't orientation supposed to be held before a person starts teaching? heheh
Are you then saying it is not Compulsary.
And from the other posters I assume it is beneficial i sure think that it might be beneficial because if you at least don't get anything from the program you might get some contacts from other teachers.
thanks |

Many many people at the last one in May didn't know they had to go until the day before; so basically it's up to your school to let you know when it will be. But it was out on Dave's before it happened: like 1 month before.
The golden shower: Someone was sleeping in the wrong bed, and someone else decided to piss on the "empty" bed that really wasn't empty...at least that's what I heard.
The training was 4 days, and the last day is half a day basically, and half another day will be a tour of a fortress.

Depends on your school; your VP/principal/head teacher will make that call; I'm sure you can put your two cents in, but just be prepared to go anyways and enjoy it if you don't have to.
Spliff is right, there were way too many teachers at the last one, and they ended up putting people up in the local love motels. Seems from all the orientation posts that every year there are way too many people...
Edit: more... |

I've heard nothing about it. Do you get travel and meal money for going? |
