Someone asked about the value of receiving a cert. I am fairly sure the cert will allow employees to increase their salary 100,000 KRW per month according to the new GEPIK and EPIK contracts...

Because of the content posting rules, the information posted on a thread cannot contain information that would be considered advertising, which is the major source of income for this web forum. As a result, if people ask they receive a PM with information, otherwise the thread would be deleted.

This is an information board so anything said must be in the form of information, with requests for specific information to be sent through PM...I understand those rules, and have had a few posts deleted because I broke them, so I don't want to risk having it happen in this thread which is actually a good question concerning online training...I sent you a PM... Smile

I think folks would like to know for certain if this cert "will allow employees to increase their salary w/ GEPIK/EPIK"....Can it be used w/ 100% certainty? If not, it's difficult to see why anyone would bother unless they are a newbie.

According to the 2007 GEPIK orientation handbook on page 80, it states:

Quote:
9. If Employee obtains further qualifications such as a Masters degree or TESOL certificate with over 100 course hours during the contract term, the elevation of the level and raise in salary, if applicable, may take place from the following month as of the completion date. However this shall be limited to the next one level per year.
-> If you are a catergory 3 teacher, you would want to take advantage of enrolling yourself at one of on-line TESOL/ TEFL courses so that you may, upon completion, be eligible for a level 2 salary from the following month as of the completion date STATED on the certificate. If you have more than one qualification within the same 'category' it does not apply.

Upon checking with GEPIK people they said that those who are a category 1 teacher may still receive the raise if they are not maxed out on their pay scale which is 2,500,000 KRW.

I was also told that GEPIK and EPIK both follow the same guidelines. Whether this is true or not is a question I cannot answer, but I was told this information nonetheless (I have contacts in both offices, so it is helpful to ask them questions when there is a need to do so)...Hope this is helpful to you...

Addition: While these are the GEPIK guidlelines, many of the local POEs are not always up to date with the regs, so you will have to provide this same information to them when providing your certificate. I had a few friends who were in need of it when they submitted their certificate a couple of months ago. So be sure to bookmark this thread...

Tob is right. I showed my 100 hour online TEFL certificate to my co-teacher and was raised from a level 2 teacher to a level 1 teacher starting the next full month. Unless you are planning to leave soon, I don't understand someone not spending $200 to get a $100 a month raise, some useful ideas for teaching, and credentials you can use anywhere in the ESL world. I am not part of EPIK or GEPIK but rather with the Kimpo Board of Education but they still raised me anyway when I showed them the passage from the new contracts.
