I don't wanna be a transformer. I wanna keep my pennis.
But if I had to be a transformer, I'd be a Gobot. Gobots are tres tres outres. |
Gobots SUCKED. I knew they sucked and I was 10. Gobots compared to transformers are a joke. Not only as far as characters go but the complexity of the mythology. Actually for an animated series the Transformers had a really complex mythology, lots of characters and storylines. |
Oh yeah? Well, if I wanted an action figure with complex mythology, I'd get this:

I remember getting Go-bots in a kid's meal at a fast food joint. The whole Go-Bot giant robot was a rip-off of the Transformer's Constructicons. They were five or six construction vehicles that not only transformed into robots themselves but also combined to form a giant robot called Devestator.

Ya, I pick Devestator. |

Oh yeah, I remember Devestator. I did not have him, though. But, I did have the one that six airplanes formed that one big guy...can't remember the name.

Awww snap! Ain't none a'ya can light'a candle to ROBOTECH! I'd be one of those F-14 look'n Mecha any day of the week and twice on weekends.
Great battle sequences, awesome transforming machines. Shooooot! The SDF-3 reins supreme. Even the love story was moving as I remember shedding a twelve-year-old tear....
Ever realized it was the only cartoon where the characters actually got killed or died? G.I.Joe? - Parachutes! Transformers? - Rechargers! Psssshaww!
Now I'm anxiously awaiting the ROBOTECH movie....(seeing as how Hollywood can't seem to come up with anything original anymore.) |

WHAT?! Optimus Prime died, if you recall.
Robotech.....good one.
Although, Voltron could hold its own as well. |

Hey, Robotech was wicked stuff, too. But as was said, Optimus Prime died and he was by far the most important character. Thats like Seinfeld getting killed halfway into the series. Anyway, Robotech was great, no doubt about it and the animation was excellent, the mecchas were awesome. Great show. Transformers doesnt take anything away from Robotech. Didnt Starscream also die? |

Like all good children's science fiction, Gundam, Robotech, and the Transformers are all shamelessly ripped off from the Japanese.
As to which particular one came first to America, there is some disagreement, but only among geeks. Nine out of ten orthodontists agree: 'It's like arguing about which is worse: someone raping your hamster, and then eating your goldfish. It's all horrible, and the chronology isn't relevant.'
But, basically, the first American transformers came out in 1984, which is the same year the first American translation/ transmogrification of Macross (Robotech) got aired. So, they're essentially contemporaries.
Gundam predates that stuff by a tiny bit. But they were big robots piloted by people, whereas Transformers lack any human involvement and are, thus, more marketable to small children who aren't allowed to learn about death and love and greed and hate (among the good guys, I mean, and not just with the plastic cardboard Nazi bad-guy robots), and all that other stuff that make the old Japanese robot stories so much more watchable.
I know this stuff because I used to do home-invasions on comic-book geeks, and then sell the proceeds of my evil on ebay. One must be informed to get top dollar, you see. |

| Well thanks for answering my question, I appreciate that. I never even knew what a Gundam was until about two years ago when a Korean co-worker back home in the states asked me to pick a model building kit for him at Coex mall. |

Why do the transformer bots have inordinately small heads?
Sheh, I wouldn't give up my big fathead to be a bot anyday. |
