This board needs a Hongdae thread, I'd like to hear what clubs/bars people like there and don't like.

I went to Harlem by mistake last night, stupid ,move, it was expensive to get in and I felt like I was going to get jumped by Koreans at any time. I would not go to Harlem in USA, so I guess I would not like it in Korea either. It was way too packed for my liking as well, and every time a Korean girl started dancing with me, 3 guys would jump in and tell me she was their girlfriend.

Halabogi is usually good fun, TinPan is cheap, FF's has good music.

Agreed. That place is full of posers, and the one in Gangnam is even worse. I actually went there with MY girlfriend and was accosted by a group of young thug-wannabe-towel-carrying-oversized-jersey-fake-platinum-chain-wearing-would-run-away-like-a-sissy-if-a-black-guy-even-looked-at-them punks who tried to break us apart on the dance floor. My girl threw a drink on one of them, and we left.

I knew a black guy who went to Harlem once and he told me the Koreans there made him feel very unwelcome.

Probably everyone on here knows which clubs I'd recommend: mainly DGBD and Skunk.

i always love ripping on kiggas. there was about 100 of them in the park in hongdae acting all aggro and tough last night. it was so much hokey BS.

every time i hear korean perceptions of what hiphop sounds like it makes me want to get AIDS for like 2 weeks. shitty flow, wack beats, wack rhymes.

i even heard a song at the gym that had this refrain...

"I'M GONNA KEEP THUGGIN' TILL MY PARENTS COME GET ME!"

imagine that scenario... dudes hanging out, high-fiving, texting fly honeys on their bling'd razrs... "aw yeah, word... oh hold up, dogg -(answers phone) yes mom? 11? yeah, ok, i'll meet you in front of apkujeong starbucks (hangs up) - aw sorry dogg, i gots ta BOUNCE!"

one of the best hiphop chump stories (that i've told before) is this one -

a group of us are in itaewon for lunch. about 10 decked out kegro fools are trying on new era hats and big phat jerseys.

my buddy looks over, the guy gives him a hard stare that could only mean "i'm rollin' 10 deep with a crew, cracker. step off" - so he cracks "hey guys, hip-hop style, huh?"

the kigga nods, pumps his fist in whatever his imagination told him what a gang sign looked like, pounded his chest, and said "yeaaah. hip hop style, yo."

"uh, more like hip-hop halloween, kids"

the three or four african-american soldier dudes waiting for the light to change all bust out laughing, and the k hiphop badasses looked like they wanted to build a tent out of their oversized b.s. wardrobes and hide for a couple of days.

Been in Harlem both Hongdae and Gangnam countless times, never had a problem. Never felt threatened. Nothing. Don't know what you all are talking about.

Harlem hongdae. Used 2 go.
main thing that stopedd me is that is so jam packed, overcrowded with people. Mostly K-boys. You can hardly move in there.

Back to the topic (and yes, Harlem in Hongdae sucks and is full of agro posers):

Cabin Oak, near exit 5, has great chicken dishes and 2,000 beers.
Tinpan 1 and 2 are good foreigner scenes.
Castle Praha has some excellent microbrew beers, it's next to DGBG.
F2 sometimes has great house music and decent djs, especially when the foreign ones are in town.
Gr8 has the best hookah selection in Korea and good wine and cocktails.
Bricxx's hookahs aren't as good, but Bricxx has more room for a big crowd and Red Rock on tap.

NB and Harlem are without doubt the worst clubs in the whole of Seoul. The Korean guys who hang out there in the XXXL basketball shirts are cringe inducing. I always liked US66 in Hongdae. Now that's gone I rarely go there. Tinpan 2 used to be okay but these days it is full of reprobates.

Ah the Korean "Hip Hop club" experience...emphasis on "hip"...not.
It's one thing to enjoy Hip Hop, It's another thing to start dressing like a gangster and start acting hard and flashing hand signs. I've seen plenty of white Eminem wanna-be's too, but these Korean posers in Seoul really are hilarious. I want to see how they would do dressed like that for one week in ANY American city.

I'm no expert, but aren't most Koreans basically the opposite of Hip Hop? I mean on the "hip, laid-back, chill, funky, smooth, iconoclastic, against-the-grain, hard, cool, open-minded, groove" scale...they've got to rank towards the bottom, don't they?

But come to think of it, maybe that's why they like it so much...to let go for awhile and pretend you're something you're not is probably liberating in a way. But please, just don't throw it back in our faces like you're down and in some gang and invented Hip Hop or something.
Come to think of it, stop doing this with all Western fashion trends and music styles please. Why not come up with something cool on your own, and if we steal it, then you can do some self-righteous complaining too.

Oh, and as for clubs, Korean men will get some respect when they start showing it ...and stop acting like jealous 14 year olds who like to pull the K-girls away from us foreigners and spread lies about us. This crap happened to us like 5 times this weekend and we were just being friendly and trying to dance a little and actually, you know, talk to people...and yet the only people who were cool to us were...surprise...the girls. That is until the K-dudes did the clock-block interception routine and started whispering B.S. into the girls' ears and/or pulling them away. I'm OK with rejection, and it really didn't matter since I was even there with my girlfriend as well, but this is just crappy, childish, xenophobic behavior.

q-vo in Hongdae used to be OK...the last couple of times I went sucked.

Catch Light is hit or miss. Do not go if they are not having some kinda party or performance because there will only be like 10 people there.

i usually go to Harlem in Gangnam...I hate that damn place but I somehow can't stop going there. They play the same music every week. I can almost predict what song is coming next. In fact, I don't think they even switch records, they just play the same cd mix over and over again every week.

What REALLY grinds my gears: Ever notice when they play a slow song in Harlem (ie Incomplete, So Sick, If I Ain't got you), these douchebags go up on the stage (bar area with the pole) with the twisty straws stuck in their hats to look like mics...then they start lipsynching to the song. I hate those motherfockers. They do that *beep* every week and people watch and applaud them, which further encourages them to continue this annoying act. Did anyone else catch this?

Anyways I know the music is better and the girls are hotter in NB...BUT that place is a freakin sauna. I can't even dance and have fun there. It feels like being in the subway during rush hour.

Anyways, I don't know why everyone is hating on the korean hip-hop/club scene. A lot of those "k-boys" really know how to have fun. I remember the club scene back in the states. Everyone is just kinda standing around and sipping their drinks, too afraid to break a sweat.
