I just got off the phone with customer service at G Market, and they told me that because I'm a foreigner, I can't use my Korean cards, cash or credit. She said the database doesn't match up, which doesn't make sense. You enter the number, you check it against the name.

I spent a few minutes trying to explain to her why exactly I would prefer to use my card instead of sending them money through a proxy or PayPal, but she just kept saying it wasn't possible. I told her that it was my strong suggestion if they want foreigners to order on their site to allow them to use their cards. What's the point of jumping through all the hoops to get a credit card in the first place if you can't use it?

She said she's checking on it with her boss to see if she can enable me to use a credit card on my account, and will call me back, but I'm not hopeful.

Has anybody successfully used a Korean card with G Market? How about Auction? They're still busy confirming my account, but I anticipate problems there too. Are there any "foreigner-friendly" (in terms of buying, not language) shopping sites out there with the depth of stuff that G Market and Auction have?

There's no problem with Auction... I use my Korean credit card on there without any problems.

It's just the (nasdaq listed even) Gmarket. What goofs. It's obviously possible, they just can't be bothered to.

You can use Korean card/bank t'fer payment options if you register via the Korean website, in Korean. Key in your ID number, choose a new user ID and you'll be fine - speaking from experience here.

[ If you registered using an English online appl. form, they wouldn't have asked you for your ID number, so you are not recognized as a resident. Stupid, I know. ]

I try to do things as Korean as possible here, but the moment I whip out my name and my ID number things don't go very well. I'll try registering again, but I could have sworn I did it on the Korean site and was booted to the foreigner one (if indeed registering through the foreign one prevents the usage of credit cards).

Ok, so I'm trying again to register through the Korean site, just to check, and even though it has a field for foreigners, it just plain won't accept my name. It keeps telling me to confirm my name, but there isn't a confirmation box next to the name.

Ugh, why is this so hard? No confirmation, just a secure form, credit card number and name. None of this horrible activation crap.

Edit: Never mind, it was just Safari being weird with Korean sites as usual. Firefox works fine.

Just do a bank transfer to their acct...simple and painless and you can use the ATM.

hahaha! But a foreigner in "our" countries can do whatever and get whatever services they want. That's the redeeming thing about the US of A. It loves immigrants! With all that Seoul has to offer shopping wise, who the hell needs G crap market anyways? I actually bought somehting cheaper than my Korean coworker, and I bought mine at Gangnam station. She bought hers on Gmarket. hahahahaha! She looked so surprised.
