I was woken up at 6:45 am this morning, to a 3-way domestic "issue" going on outside my apartment. A guy and a girl were in a rather verbal argument, which escalated into him grabbing her around her neck (choke hold) and covering her mouth, and shaking her/roughing her up. At this point I stuck my head out the window and yelled "Ya! Hajima!". This got the chicks attention and she pointed to me. It stopped them for all of 30 seconds. Then another guy (presumably with them) got up and tried to get in the middle of things, which made it worse. He tried to separate the guy and the girl. The guy got angry that he butted in, and started to physically fight with him (throwing soju bottles all the while). Then the girl (stupid *beep*) got angry that her helper was butting in and it started a 3 way fight. Things got worse and escalated. They moved to right outside my apartment, pinning eachother to the ground and beating the crap out of eachother. A crowd of my Korean neighbours gathered around to watch the show, but did nothing.
So I went outside, stood up above them on my stairs (behind my locked gate) and yelled at them (Korean and English). I told them to grow the eff up and go home. Children are on their way to school and have to dodge the fight, and the broken soju bottles. I said that if they didn't effing stop it I was calling the cops (phone in hand). They ignored me so I started to dial. Only then, when the neighbours saw that a foreigner was the one who was taking action, and they weren't, did a neighbour step in and say "no no don't call police!". I said "well if none of you people are smart enough to do something to stop it, someone effing has to!". They lost face. She said "no please don't, I will call!!". So I let her call, which might have been best since my Korean isn't stellar. Anyway the cops came and took them all away.
But seriously, why gather around but not do anything?!?!? You're watching two guys beat the crap out of eachother as one is trying to pummel a chick, and kids are having to be ushered past. It's almost 7am. Time to call the cops already.
Rant finished... not sure if it even made any sense cause I'm typing in a rush. It just made me angry that it took me losing my cool to have someone do something. I've never told anyone off like that in my life. I think I embarassed my neighbours moreso than myself, but still. Now I'm going to be known as "that crazy white chick who yelled at the Koreans".
Why people do nothing to stop physical abuse in this country astounds me. At least I got someone to call the cops. |

I know you're upset but the way you told the story... LMAO.
Korea is like China. People don't butt in in other people's business. They're afraid something bad will happen to them if they do. Selfish? Yes.
But I don't mind people being selfish as long as they acknowledge the fact that they are selfish. But they call themselves the people with a lot of 정(humaneness?) and they call Korea 동방예의지국(the part of Asia with manners). Now that makes me disgusted even though I'm a Ko myself. |

Korean_Man - it makes me feel better to hear a Korean admit to these things. Maybe all hope isn't lost.
It just seriously made my blood boil. And I hate that after all this, it will likely be me who comes across as the "crazy one" haha. |

Great story! I can picture the whole event and you tell it well. It's kind of a shame because you live in quite a nice area. |

I don't think they will think you're crazy. But some of them might think you have overreacted. I mean... it's just a man beating his wife; don't be so sensitive! |

It's difficult for me to believe the story. There's got to be an explanation. Maybe they thought she's just lying/sleeping on the floor. What was the cashier doing? |

It's happened before. There is the classic story of a woman being raped and murdered in front of an apartment building while screaming "Help!" "help!" No one helped her and the rationale was "I thought someone else was going to call." |

That's right. Boyfriend, girlfriend, interferring friend, by-standers are all think'n "Who's that crazy foreigner think she is?!" ohh the irony.... Notice that when a guy did try to stop it that the girlfriend took her abuser's side? THAT'S why it's not good to get physically involved. You'll only get yourself hurt and booted outta the country. Your involvement is NOT appreciated.
Got a video camera with a VERY bright light? Try that next time. Physical force? Not a chance. By-standers? Good one! Police? Psshaw! BUT! The almighty lens....everyone will cower and kowtow.... |

I have been having a I hate Korea week. My first one in about 7 months. It just so happens to be that I came to Korea 3 years ago today as well. Arghhh, I think I just need a vacation. |

I don't have a video camera, but my cell phone seemed to do the trick. When they saw that the foreigner was going to call the cops, that made them realize they should have done it sooner, and my neighbour (younger woman) took it upon herself to call instead of me.
I knew getting physically involved wasn't smart, especially since I'm a female, and have never been in a real fight, so I stayed behind my locked gate up on my steps kind of above everyone. I wasn't about to get myself injured or in trouble over it. The cops arrived in like 2 minutes (there is a station close by) so it was overwith quickly, but it went on from about 645 till like 715 until I got someone to do something.
A video camera would have been great haha. I could just see how I would have been perceived then haha. |

I think physical fights are not considered as serious in Korea. Some parents and teachers even (used to) say they all grow up beating up each other when kids fight. Kinda blase attitude. That is not right. On the other hand, you get these people.
"Brave civilians" who saved others despite direct threats to their lives. |

That's why the first thing they teach women in urban saftey courses is to not yell for help, but to yell, "FIRE!!!" at the top of your lungs. |

By far the best thing to do in this kinda situation is throw rotten eggs at them and shout that Korea should still be a colony of Japan. |
