I'm thinking of doing a short sharp burst of the atkins diet for 2 or 3 weeks. Just to make myself even more sexy by the end of the rainy season and beach time.

Has anybody done atkins in korea?

Can you advise on any good foods to eat?

Of course it's ok. Millions of people have done it for short periods to lose a bit of weight. The Food Pyramid fanatics have tried everything to debunk Atkins but they can't seem to come up with anything scary for those doing it short-term.

Long-term? Most Atkins followers re-introduce some carbs, fruit, veg, etc into their diet after they have reached their target weight. As recommended by Atkins.

I did it for 3 months in 2004 and lost 5kg's quite easily and really enjoyed all that meat, cheese and eggs. I did it at home in UK though. Much easier I think than doing it in Korea where, if you don't eat rice, you're fukked!!

Before I make general comments, I just wanted to comment on this in the OP:

Atkins really requires about 1 month or more. There are several phases to Atkins and it really requires you to pass through all the phases to do the diet right. When most people mention "The Atkins Diet" they are referring only to the induction phrase (1st). ONLY doing the induction phase isn't really going to help you too much. To do it REALLY well requires more than a month as you have to keep a close eye on your weight and watch the foods you eat.

It's really not that stupid.
If people understood the diet and the phases a bit better, they'd realize it's not all that bad. Abusing the Atkins diet isn't the smartest thing to do but a) It's only for a couple weeks b) People abuse their bodies FAR worse, and for FAR longer stretches of time than the induction phase.

I've done Atkins here. It was not the most varied diet I've had but I lost a TONNE of weight in my first month (about 30lbs)and a total 60-70lbs (in about 3).
That said, everyone agreed that I started to look a lot better as I started to add the fruit and ALL veg back into my diet (VERY slowly, over the course of the second and third month) .
And I can't deny that.

Generally speaking, my energy levels were GREAT and I felt pretty darn good! Though when it came to physical exertion (going up the subway steps for example), it winded me completely.

My reason for doing it:
I had a very real carb addiction and I needed that diet to get all that stupid crap under control. The first 6 months after I finished that diet, I gained a bit of the weight back but I felt FANTASTIC!

So yeah, if your ONLY goal is weight loss, I would highly reccomend Atkins, but the WHOLE Atkins diet. But if you want to lose weight, change your eating habits, and be healthy while you lose weight, I really think there are better ways around it.

This is a tough country to do Atkins in. There's almost this blind expectation to eat rice with every meal. I have quite a bit of weight to lose so I hardly touch rice anymore. It's definitely working as I'm taking weight off but the Korean teachers look at me like I'm insane for not eating rice. I still wonder how Koreans stay so thin as they eat tons of rice. Also, they don't seem to exercise a hell of a lot and they drink lots of soju. Mind you, they seem to be a country of ectomorphs. They're definitely a small body type.

There wont be any good results from a short term, 2-3 week diet.
Most diets dont work if you cant control yourself.

The best method is to have 3-5 small meals, nothing after 5-6pm and WORK OUT, WORK OUT, WORK OUT.

That is a really, really poor idea.

First, you only lose weight when you create a caloric deficit. PERIOD.

Second, Atkins is really only effective over a long period of time -- think "life." A protein-sparing modified fast (e.g. http://www.wannabebig.com/article.php?articleid=213) may be more your speed, but Atkins would be a horrid choice.

I could go into details and if you press me I will, but for now suffice it to say that a 2-3 week period of doing Atkins is at best worthless and may even lead to the opposite of what you want to accomplish.[/url]

There's no need to cut off your eating at 5pm. You may want to limit sugar intake before bed (glucose - insulin - reduced metabolism during sleep - better chance of the hyperlipidemic effects of insulin) but weight is a function of calories. Reduce your caloric intake throughout the day, don't starve yourself at night.

Exercise is always a good idea.

normal:
If your normal daily diet is about 20% fat, 30% protein, 50% carbs (is that fair to say?), then if you redistributed caloric intake to proteins and fat, wouldn't that still give you a net deficit?

Also, I was eating a pretty large amount of food when I was doing my Atkins (I was certainly never hungry): Is it possible that, despite all the food I ate, I still had a caloric deficit since I ate almost no carbs (around 20-30gs a day).

I seem to recall a recent study where weight loss is basically water loss. There's no evidence of fat loss.
