We are finishing in the fall and want to try the public system. Is EPIK the only way to find a public school position? Are there other ways? I have noticed recruiters advertizing public positions, but the salary and vacation seems different.

I have read many of the fourms but the information is 2004. I am sure some things have changed.

Anyone out there doing public I would appreciate your advice etc...

If you haven't already found this out, EPIK is publics everywhere but Seoul + Gyeongi-do, GEPIK is publics in Gyeongi-do only, and ETIS is publics in Seoul only. I think the ETIS website says it only deals with recruiters, but maybe if yer already in RoK this might be different.

We are already in Korea. However, we are returning home when our contract finishes and want to return in January. We would like to have something lined up before we leave. Tired of hakwons.

I was placed in a really great public school by a company in Toronto.

If you want an alternative to EPIK, PM me.

I know this is a little off topic. But some public school jobs recruiters send me sounds bogus. Like 2.3 for someone with no experience. And then when I want to apply and everything, they say it's taken. I wonder if it's a trick. Then they never ever tell me where in Gyungido. Are there really public jobs starting at 2.3 for newbies?

Yes, a newbie at teaching could make that much...all that's needed is two yrs proven work history (any job) and a TEFL cert...that would put you at 2.3.

My job I got through a recruiter, but I'm contracted directly to my school. No EPIK influence at all. It starts above 2.3 (thats all I'm goin to say. Ladies don't talk about money Wink )

OP you could pm anyone on this site with a good public school job and join the public school system.
If all the newbies pm'd us before signing all the bad hogwons (and maybe the English programs of some public schools) would go out of business.
Heck, that'd be better than a union!

I have heard of some recruiters including extra pay that is available in some school districts for extra classes in their advertising. So as a first time teacher with no experience 2.3m per month is realistically available, just be aware that it may mean base pay + overtime teaching.
