Korean alcohol is awful. The worst in Asia. Please tell me another Asian country that makes worse alcohol.

Taiwan (a country?), unless it has changed since 2002.

At 12% alcohol level I'd much rather drink red wine. Red wine from Italy is much better tasting than baik soju. Really, comapre alcohols worldwide and Korean alcohol doesn't stand a chance. Get real folks!

Yeah, but it's difficult to get wine in many samgyeopsal/galbi houses, so it's not always an option.

You can also mix mechil(plum juice) in with the soju. This takes the bad taste out of it. I only go to charcoal burning galbi Sam gyup sal places

The best alcohol made in Korea (though it's not traditional Korean alcohol):

The beers at Platinum in Gangnam.

I'm a big fan of the bamboo alcohol (tastes like apple juice), sake slushies (fine, not Korean), and dongdongju/makoli (varies a lot but the good stuff is good).

I had Andong soju this weekend and it was tasty in that strong alcohol sort of way, a whole lot better than Chinese soju. Jesus, that stuff has about 8 flavors to it, ranging from bad to horrible, and the last is the worst.

Soju slushies aren't bad either but they don't seem to be very strong. So drink a pitcher of those to begin with and then move onto something stronger.

Friend of mine brought Andong soju back with him when he was in that city last year, made a gift of it to me (thanks, zyz) and it was mighty tasty. If you know a place in Seoul to buy it, pm me and you'll have my thanks.

Don, you and me seem to have similar preferences ... gotta get together one of these nights.

Cool

ANDONG SOJU IS FIRE WATER!!!
I woke one morning flat on the ground nose first!
As for Korean alcohol....i have avoided it the past few years. Not nice for the most part. Bad hangovers, no flavor, chemically enhanced. Stuff is piss IMO. I don't mind a Cafri once and a while...but that be it!

Sorry to stray the topic off abit. I am not sure if this is true, but I've been hearing rumors that the hof places that sell draft beer, the majority of them mixes it with good decent amount of water. Also I was in Bundang near by the bungy jump park went to a bar there call "Taduri" the draft beer tasted quite different than alot of hof bars , it tasted exactly identical to the actual cans/bottles itself.

Im surprised none of you guys have mentioned my fave Korean tipple yet - Chongha.

Its essentailly Korean sake.

Whilst the Japanese variety has a slight edge of superiority to it in terms of flavour and subtlety, chongha is still a very mild, pleasant tasting, smooth drink. And only 1,900 a bottle.

Its around 10% and is one of those alcohols that comes on nice and slowly building up to what I like to call the golden moment, a drunkeness that sweeps over you like a soft intoxicating carress and stays for a few hours leaving you neither groggy (beer) or slaughtered (soju) yet overwhelmed in a kind of sensual bliss, one foot in this and one in the floating world...

Soju too has a place in my heart. A very love - hate relationship though.

Whilst the next day hangover is literally a living hell - nothing tastes better with samguipsal. And nothing else sends a wave of relaxation through the brain and has the shoulders dropping from up around the ears after a sh&tty day of teaching like a whole bottle of soju, poured in a pint glass and necked in one shot. First the head clears, the chest opens up, the shoulders drop... Follow by an hour on the sofa listening to fave tunes or just sitting by the window watching the world go by and youre bullet proof for an hour.

I always regret getting fully drunk on the stuff though and poktangju is never, never a smart idea... ah poktangju, okay mr Kim, just the one then, yes I like norraebang... more samguipsal..? okay then... hostess bar you say.....

Gotta be makkeoli. A bowl/glass with a piping hot pajeon / pancake is damn near a match made in heaven. Second choice would be samgyeopsal and baekseju. I've found the Korean alcohol alone isn't too good...gotta mix with food! And yeah, the beer pretty much sucks, but like someone already said, Cass Red is alright and at least can get you drunk if you have enough of it.

sounds like a special little drink we used to call Swamp Water. Just a big mix of whatever is around that given night Wink

made for some really nasty hangovers.
