The Most Beloved Of All In The World recently told me I should spend less time arguing on the internet.

ME : Look, if someone says something stupid, hateful, or just WRONG, how is the world better if I ignore it?

SHE : Not your job to make the world better.

ME : WHOSE job IS it, then?

SHE : They are STILL going to keep being wrong and stupid and hateful no matter what you tell them.

ME
: So I shouldn't try?

SHE : Have some of this miyak-guk I made. I think it might be more healthy for you.

Well, it was delicious, of course. The only wise thing I've ever done in my life is marry a woman wiser than than I am myself ... yeah, you're better off eating soup.

haha, I think your Most Beloved is correct, although isn't it oh-so-difficult to sit back and let some of these ignorant people continue on in their oblivious dementia? Don't we feel some kind of weird duty at least to try and make our expat community less heinously close-minded?

(the answer is yes, FYI)

Just to let you know, she is wrong, I have been influenced several times by your writing.

You do make a difference.

How was the soup?

Exquisite. I'll fess up, though. The conversation was pure fiction, except the part about the soup. The Beloved is very busy in business, education and politics and seldom has time to make soup for me (except last Sunday) and actually, that's the way I want her to be, because the world needs people like her. She does think I invest too much emotion in arguing politics, though, and she's probably right - often the best answer is to just walk away.

You are kind to say what you have said, and you have also told me one or two things I didn't know before. I think that's why we come here.

A couple of months ago over dinner, a guy told me I completely changed his mind about the war in Iraq with all the stuff I was up to in the CE Forum, said he even changed his party affiliation because of it - blew me away. All these years, I just thought I was just entertaining myself, never occurred to me anyone would pay attention ...

Well, okay. One guy. Then maybe another one. Then maybe they will say a word or two to some other people, get some gray matter churning in the world, get some hearts beating. Might be worth the trouble, after all.

Gotta stop getting angry at idiots and bigots, though. Needlessly stressful, and doesn't do a thing to make them stop being stupid and spreading hate.

On the odd occasion I've been influenced by some who've argued against your ideas. Does this make me stupid, hateful and wrong?

On youtube a couple of months ago, it was the 25th anniversary of the British defeat of the Argentine forces in the Falklands and I took up an anti colonialism stance (How can a group of islands 6000 miles away be 'British') I'm British and an ex serving member of her majestys armed forces but I'm also a big fan of logic, and the distance between said islands and present occupiers in my opinion defies logic.

Anyway... I get arguing with two standard bearers of our flag and great nation who both claim to be veterans of the Falklands war and pm'd me
and asked for my address 'we are coming to sort you out you spick traitor' so I gave them my address, times I would be in and directions. No, they never turned up and I felt a bit of a berk about it but probably not as much as they felt a berk. Cool

Haha, with British people I always argue why we shouldn't have it, but with Latin Americans, I always argue why we were right to have fought for it. I suppose I just like fighting...

Gonna share a HUGE secret with you. Are you ready? Sometimes I'm wrong. Sometimes I admit it in the forums once I figure it out, and sometimes I pm the people who set me straight and say thank you. Sometimes I forget to do either of those things just because I'm busy. What can I say? I'm human, just like you.

Turns out I was correct on just about everything I ever said about the Iraq war, though, and you know what? I never wanted to be. I wanted us to get in, do the deed, get out and let the people who live there sort stuff for themselves so the men and women who put on uniforms to go over there could get back home and do what they're best at, which is making beautiful American babies. Ain't worked out that way.

Christ, every freaking day I wish I had been wrong about this war ...

End it. End now.

Oh yeah for sure, in my increasing dotage I think we were right to challenge the aggresion of a right wing dictator even if that means it vindicates the mother of satan, Margeret Thatcher Evil or Very Mad of 'war crimes'
such as sinking of the Belgrano.

As I'm British but with a South American mother I can see both sides of the argument but I think personally it is about time we as a nation started to rid ourselves of our overseas territories. If the Gibraltarians and the Falklanders want to be truly British then they should come and live here and suffer with the rest of us! Laughing

And the fact that that useless bloody Island is now costing the British taxpayer a huge fortune each year because of defense and stuff. Yeah, I'd be quite happy for it to be resolved. However a lot of British blood was spilt over it, and it might be difficult for a PM to do it in the near future.

Bob c'mon...when you fictionalize a conversation you can say whatever you want! Thts the best you could come up with?

I'm sure in real life your wife ends all conversations with.."I'm in business, education and politics", before heading off to make soup.

As the saying goes.

"Fighting on the internet is like winning the Special Olympics. Even if you win, you're still a tard."
