So the headlines would read if there was an actual fire in my school.
So the school has its fire drill today..But only for the 5th and 6th graders.. So I think ahh hell I will watch the festivities. My school is the standard 4 story matchstick building. An air raid siren goes off. I am thinking ok then i come to realize it supposed to symbolize a fire truck again ok.. The fire alarm bell goes off. I am on the third floor and waiting for the mass of kids to come down the stairs.. I wait and wait. I can hear them but no kids. Finally they trickle down the stairs ahh stupid me they had to put on their outdoor shoes first.
So they make it down the stairs and usually you move away from the burning building to your designated meeting place. Again silly me I should have known it was right in front of the school and not out on the relative safety of the playground where there should be no falling debris or flames leaping out of windows.
I just kept thinking to myself you poor kids. |

Our fire drill was cancelled last month because of rain......
But we used the time to do a nuclear attack drill. Really. The students got under their desks for 2 minutes. Come on Kim Jeong Il!!! Bring it on!!! |

At my school, our fire alarm goes off probably once or twice a month. The first time, I started leaving the school, but classes were still going and showed no signs of stopping. If there ever is a fire, we are going to have 1,500 dead people and one live English teacher. Even if they do leave the school, it will be complete chaos and a good 100 kids should get trampled to death. |

I'm surprised after those 2 mothers died in the last fire drill that they've continued them. Clearly fire drills are evil American ideas like child seats in cars. Koreans have their own ways of protecting their children, you know.
After those two mothers fell to their death after the local FD decided to showboat, my friend was talking about it with her students. Her kids seemed confused as to even why you had to have fire drills in the first place. Made zero sense to them. Prepare for a disaster? You mean our fire extinguishers need to be checked regularly? You mean we shouldn't play with those emergency flashlights so when a real disaster comes, they have battery power?
The bit about the car seats... last year or so Korea passed a law requiring parents to use car seats for small children. No more Britney Spearing it. The article is no longer online but there was a jaw dropping quote that I saved:
Quote: |
"We don't have to do what foreigners do in their countries. We have our own way to take care of babies," another posting at the agency's Web site said. |

Hahaha. No doubt waiting for helicopter rescue or some bizarre suicide pact. |

yeah - same thing happened at my school - the kids were so bad at it - they had to practice it another three times (in a row) all morning 2 days later - as the prinicipal was really worried - as the fire inspectors were coming..... |

We had one the other day. Had to yell at the kids to slow the heck down and not run over the top of each other like a bunch of adjumas fighting for discounted cabbage. My Korean co-teacher, not the fastest armadillo on the highway, had the kids go out barefooted, probably the one right decision he has made in the two years I have been there. Since we teach grade one, you literally need to hammer the message into some of the little mouth breathers. Anyhow, the principal was outside, watching the kids parade by and asked my co-teacher where their shoes were. If only I knew the Korean for "what and send them back into a burning building" or "how do you like your child meat, rare, medium or well done" I would have asked. |

I think the children have time to put on their shoes, even if a real fire alarm went off. The idea of a fire drill isn't to evacuate in the event of a conflagration. A fire has been detected. There is danger. Get out of the building in a calm, orderly fashion. Indeed, if there was a major fire in progress, there might be broken glass or rubble. Wouldn't the kids need their shoes? |

The point is to get out of the building, not to change your shoes. Kids wear those indoor white shoes at school. As well, a couple of cuts on your feet are much better than burning to death. |
