Why are the Rangers paying Gomez so much? And Shanahan? They're paying him too much, too.
Real head scratcher.
Flyers are wheeling and dealing. |

Question for ya, can a player turn down an offer sheet? Does he have to take it? For instance, lets say Crosby wants to win Stanleys, takes a high, yet not as high paycheck, to spread the wealth on his team to win. Possible?

Yeah, you don't have to sign it. But in Vaneks case, he ain't turning down a $50 million offer with apparently TWO signing bonuses!?!
Smee, I think Kariya signed for less (just over a million?) with the Avs because he wanted to play with his bestest friend Selanne and play on a contender. Rumour has it that they used to have matching sports cars with eachothers names on the license plates. |

Larry Walker signed a 3.3 million deal with the expos years back...guess what his number was....33.
As for the Karyia signing...I think he also really wanted a crack at Stanley. He could have gone to many other places for more cash, but he wanted a shot and the Avs were contenders.
Speaking of the Avs, they aint looking to bad either for next year.

Yeah, the Oilers can't be too happy with Smyth back in the Northwest! Gonna add more fuel to the rivalry.
Btw, we're you an Expos fan? I along with the 23 others who went to the Olympic Stadium were devastated when they left.
As a friend of mine once said, "You're spos to like the 'Spos" |

No team will want to play against the Islanders. They will be very difficult wins. Be prepared for a world of pain. Nolan's boys will get their pound of flesh along the boards and in open ice.
Guerin knows how to hit. Hunter and Witt are top-10 in hits. Simon will re-sign and is very physical. Asham and Meyer are 100+ hits per season. Campoli hits every game as well. Park and Sim hit and while not hard, they're very fast. Ted Nolan will have this half the team banging the opposition each and every game.
Islanders will NOT be easy wins.

I wouldn't write off the Isles so soon. DiPietro is good; their top line is probably going to be Comrie, Guerin, and Fedotenko; and, they're still 15 million under the cap. They might get Sheldon Souray.
Comrie's got something to prove, and a one year contract; Guerin got 36 goals last year, and while he is 36, he's still a tough player who hits and goes to the net; Fedotenko might be fit well with Comrie's speed and scrappiness, adding a bit of speed on the wing.
Satan can fit that line too.
Honestly, I think they might sneak into the playoffs again. Ted Nolan gets good work from his boys, and the owner likes to spend money.
Plus, Yashin's gone. That will help. |
All good points.
Especially the cap room and an owner willing to spend the cash to take the team to the max. When? Maybe not until the season starts or part way in, or at the trading deadline. But expect serious organizational support for Isles success. Do not be surprised if Marleau or Marian Hossa ends up on Long Island at some point, as each is entering the last year of their contract and the Isles are deep in cash and willing to spend (and have several good prospects to trade), but nervous to do so until a player proves his worth: hence the attractiveness of upcoming RFA.
Bet against the Leafs or Habs making the playoffs (again) before you bet against the Isles. |

Are you guys serious? The Isles are going to be TERRIBLE!!!
Guerin? Please!!
DiPietro has never proven himself an all-star caliber goalie throughout a whole season.. and he has a worse team than he had last year in front of him now...
Even with Nolan (who I kind of enjoy) they are not going to make the playoffs... it's not even going to be close... |

It's appropriate here to temper your incredulous arrogance with a reminder that you were on the record here at Dave's with your prediction that both Anaheim and Ottawa were going to lose the first round of the playoffs and both went all the way.
It's a matter of tone. (But I guess people back home have a know-it-all attitude with their predictions, dismissing others... I forget how it was, having been in face-saving Korea so long, I don't encounter such attitudes much.) |

| Let's just say that the Islanders have no chance in hell to win the cup. Not a bold statement. |

Listen Van, obviously you have some issue with me, because you like to nickpick everything I say.. you've been getting progressively more whiny over the years... but now you're attacking my 'tone'?
Ninja please.. Because you don't agree with my predictions you have to try to position yourself as some standard for message board fare.. Look in the mirror to see the arrogant one...
It's hockey talk, and that being said, remember what that's all about, it's not some freaking counselling session where one should worry about 'tone' and other bollocks like that...
the Islanders are going to stink worse than probably even the Leafs... and that's saying a lot...
As for your playoff predictions, do you want a cookie or something? They are called predictions for a reason.... |

Money is no object to the Rangers...
Most players are overpaid, but kudos to the Rangers for going out strong this off-season.. they've been decent for a while and obviously Sather now thinks that it's time to try to go for the next step...
If I were a Ranger fan I'd be happy, and if I were a Leaf fan I'd wonder when the hell they're going to get a front office with a clear vision and some balls...
That being said, I hate the Rangers and hope the curse of overpaid players sucking in New York continues... |

Exactly. Living in Korea for five years has blunted my memory of how overbearing and dismissive sports predictions can be.
Plus I'm getting too old for such postures of confidence: too many surprises undermine judgements people make, and - most to the point - saying or implying another's prediction is absurd and silly is just beyond me.
Ah... forget it.
I'm so used to Korean ways of communicating I'm constantly finding fellow waygooks obnoxious. I'll bow out of the conversation until I find something I can enjoy about it. |

Lads...lets be cool here...religion sex and politics are the touchy subjects in this world...not nhl off season hockey!
As for the Isles, my first post was against them...but then i got thinking instead of typing...they could be solid for sure. Getting rid of Yashin is huge and Owen Nolan is a player. I think Diepietro is a heck of a goalie though health is his concern.
Ryan Smyth did a no no for sure...and he is a Banff boy at that. Talking about pisin where you sleep.
Early prediction: Rangers win the East. West still to wide open for me at this point...best division to watch will be the Atlantic for sure. The doormats will be ( and im sorry to say it, but remember it is how i feel) Toronto and Montreal and the SouthEast division.

As a fan of the Isles since the glory days, I have a vested interest believing they have a good chance of making the playoffs. Even so, I'm not in denial; it's gonna be a tough division this year.
One thing about Yashin...while he was certainly a huge leech on their budget, he did put up some modest numbers in his New York time. Overpaid, yes; but not as hideously awful--not by a long shot--as his detractors make him out to be. I understand why people hate him so, believe me, but he's still an upper-tier player...top 100 for sure.
He could be a steal for somebody, somewhere, as a twelfth round pick in a pool somewhere. Look for Alexei to put up 60 points next year in some backwater poo-pond.
Hey, maybe Ottawa will take him!

I would never bet against a Ted Nolan coached team. Even though I loath the Isles as I am a Capitals fan, I think they could suprise. They will certainly do better than the Crapitals.
Washington signed Viktor Kozlov, Michael Nylander and Tom Poti. Whooo!
