Well, I remember a month or two back there was a post on WorknPlay that went something like "Suchandsuch hagwon . . . rips you off." Not sure why someone would go to the trouble of paying for an ad like that, but whatever.

In Today's Herald, they retracted some of the article. I think Chris Gelkin must be on vacation or something.

The herald stated that Ms. Song did not place the discriminatory advertisement(illegal ad according to Gelkin) because her identification was stolen.

What a joke, are we to believe she doesn't discriminate? How many Australians/New Zealanders/Irish/Brits or heavier than average people does she have working for her? Okay Ms. Song your Hagwon is different than 1000's of others. Rolling Eyes

What proof did she show the Herald that her identification was stolen?

Yeah I noticed that today. I suspect good ol' Korean libel laws make it possible for her to sue even if she did run the ad.

In the original article:

Quote:
When it was pointed out to Ms. Song that she was breaking multiple Korean laws with her advertisement, she cut the conversation short with: "I am hanging up, I do not wish to speak with you, and you will not be considered for this job."

It seems like the reporter talked to her. I gather she didn't deny she ran the ad. Now she denies it and claims her ID was stolen? Well, okay.

A review:

I also later learned that, despite displays of Christianity, Gina seems to assume that lying is an integral part of her job.

Any hagwon director who claims to be Christian... run. Fast.

I wonder if the writer of the article still works for the Herald?

Oh, I'm sure he's still at the Herald. Chris is the big English teacher crusader there. He regularly writes about bad hagwons (like my former hagwon).

Gina song's husband is a high ranking government official. I am sure the writer had some serious crap fall on him. I would be surprised if he is still writing..I bet he took a long long long vacation.

I knew Gina Song and would have to agree that she is not a good person. I also doubt she wrote the advertisement since her English sucked...I bet a suck-up English teacher at the school wrote that advertisement for her. If it was an English teacher that wrote it then I hope they get what they deserve...a Gina Special up the arse.

Maybe you gave them the idea to blame it on someone else?

Is it possible it was written by a native speaker taking the piss out of her real hiring policies?

That's what I was thinking as I was reading this - that it was written by someone who wants the hagwon to go out of business.

I am sure that they didn't need my help to learn to say" It's not me....it's someone else". Seems pretty simple, even for a Korean, to know not to admit wrong doing.
But if it lets you sleep at night....then it's my fault. Rolling Eyes .

This is off Chris Gelkin's Blog. I'm sad to see him go.

A New Adventure

At the end of July my wife and I finally bid farewell to Seoul. The departure had been a long time in the planning - and was certainly not some last minute decision in reaction to any events that were playing out at the time.
Negotiations for the new job had been ongoing since the beginning of the year, and a final decision was made in June.
It wasn't an easy decision on many levels. First there was fact that I'd be once again changing direction - returning to television news after 20 months editing and writing for a newspaper. There was the convenience of South Korea compared to the rather more restricted and less developed environment - at least from a Western perspective - of Iran. Many of the things people in Korea take for granted are virtually unknown here.
On the other hand, Iran and the Iranians have a certain charm and openness that would be hard to find anywhere else.
Certainly, the level of English among average Tehranis is rather higher than you would find among Seoulites - and many of them take every opportunity they can to show off their skills.
Colleagues, local merchants and even taxi drivers were eager to practice their English, using it to enquire where we hailed from and how were we enjoying Tehran.
And so far, we are enjoying it just fine.
Once settled, I hope to update the blog more regularly - though probably not with tales of poorly treated English teachers alas!

Chris and Shirley (newly nicknamed Yoda because of the very impressive impersonation she gives of the diminutive Jedi Knight master from Star Wars

A lot of websites charge to post job openings, but WorknPlay ads are FREE. Wink
