I've been to both Seoul and Busan, either by KTX or airplane. I'm itching for a new adventure.

Is it even possible to ride a scooter from Seoul to Busan, avoiding the freeways? It'd be nice to take the scenic route, stop by small towns, talk to people, etc.

I'd figure it'll take a few days. I don't know how to ride a motorcycle, so scooter is probably the best bet.

Holy crap, scooters aren't meant for that kind of riding. I respect your idea, but you should really get a 250cc bike or bigger.

You might want to get a Honda Cub. I saw an episode on the Discovery channel. Those things will take all kinds of abuse.

A break-off group from my bike club inThailand were called " Old Man On Motorbike"

They had classic scooters - C50's C90's etc and would take them on mass outings.

They rode from Bangkok to Mae Hon Sot and back no worries.

My scooter could not break 70km/h and I would never take it on a freeway. It's like strolling out onto a street where all the cars are going by at 60km/h.

I think it is a great way to see the countryside up close via side roads � I have done similar long rides in Thailand on a Honda Wave 125cc. The bike was robust enough the biggest problem is it is a butt buster. The seat and shock systems are not made for such long rides. Bring extra cushion and plan on taking lots of breaks. Don't forget a good quality sunscreen.

Had friends come up to Seoul monthly from Yeosu on scooters. So long hauls can be done. Just plan your route carefully, take lots of breaks(as another poster wrote), and you should be ok.

Plan your route carefully. Some roads that look like regular roads on maps are actually quite freeway-like in reality, and I think would be a bit dangerous on a scooter. I'm thinking of, as an example, hwy 3 south of chungju towards busan.

Make sure your rear lights work and are bright. install some extra ones. If you're ever in a mountainous region, you're going to be moving slow and you dont want to be rear ended.

wear all your gear - riding boots, helmet, some riding gloves, etc. speeds are faster and crashing for whatever reason would suck without gear.

lots of breaks, lots of water, don't push yourself - stop for the night when you feel tired.

Make sure to check your oil frequently during the trip as the oil can run out quickly and will blow the engine if there's not enough.

My buddy and I rode from Suncheon to Yeocheon (the new part of Yeosu, only about a 40km round trip) one morning to go to Immigration before school. I checked and topped up my oil beforehand, he didn't.

My scooter was fine, his engine blew 15km into the trip. We double-teamed to Yeocheon and luckily found a scooter guy with a truck to pick up his scooter, take it back to the shop, chuck in a new engine and send us on our way in my time for school (we also had time to take care of our Immigration requirements).

Just remember to check your oil and have a good time. I'd love to take a long-distance trip like that!

Ha, I remember riding a scooter across the island of Rhodes when I was a Uni student. Gloves or lots of sunscreen on your hands is essential - my hands were destroyed after a full day of hot sun baring down on them.
