I know most of the "public service announcement" commercials on AFN usually contain the most basic information (don't sexually harass people, wear a helmet, etc.) and have horrible acting.

Tonight I just saw one aimed at teenagers that promoted abstinence and used the risk of pregnancy as a scare tactic.

Korea is not a long-term placement for soldiers, so most of their families aren't here. Is this English-language ad using teenagers really worth putting on TV in Korea? Is this for the soldiers? What's more is that abstinence-only programs don't work. They could've at least mentioned condoms and pulling out (sarcasm. Insert Iraq joke here) as proper anti-pregnancy methods.

Bush's cronies are at work here in Korea! Don't have sex. Ever.

I've always had the idea that AFN's psas aren't actually intended for the GIs, but intended for Koreans watching AFN to subversively persuade them that all GIs here are all high-moral upstanding citizens who are always trying to better themselves. The no-sex ad just adds to my suspicion.

Ah the one I sort of miss is the "recently someone has been mailing counterfeit sports jerseys from a post office". You know the one with the warning about getting good deals on NFL stuff in "wong dong market". Although it happened "recently" the commercial ran for a good solid 3 years.

I think some of the ads are targeted at GIs. Ads reminding them to be careful with emails and disposing sensitive documents. Sure this seems like common sense, but maybe some folks need a reminder.

The ad I find suspicious is the one that shows people buying huge amounts of the same product (like batteries) from the commisary (military store) for resale in the Korean black markets. "Don't do it because it's illegal."

With the amount of off-the-base consumer products and packaged foods I see in the Korean markets, it looks like the Americans are purposely flooding these markets with American products.

My favorite three are the following:

The Ad reminding people to report prostitution- seriously how could they even film that with a straight face. What happens when someone does report it?

The Spills Trips and Falls 'expert' which for whatever reason I just cant get STFU outta my head when I see it.

Finally the add warning soldiers about the dangers of leaving socks or whatnot on their stairs. My lord, people arent going to think Americans are upstanding because of these adds, their going to think of them as mental midgets.

Many of the bases have army personal and contractors who come here with their families. So that's a lot of American children growing up in Korea. I sometimes see the older ones drinking with their mates and it's obvious they are not teachers or soldiers.

As for the adverts they are stupid as they make zero mention of contraception. Abstinence and respect for your body are all good ideas, but realistically these things alone don't work for very long. Children taught abstinence only are more likely to not use contraception when they do have premarital sex.

One of the worst ones I can remember is the one with the penguin wearing a Hawaiian t-shirt singing, "I gotta be me!". Then the penguin gets eaten by a polar bear (I think, it's been a while sinse I've seen it). This is followed by the warning, "If you stand out in a crowd, you stand out to terrorists!" Jesus Christ.
