As of this month, there is NO fee to get a KORAIL card. If you have an old card, they'll even give you a refund (if you had the previous card) when you get your new card!
This is a great site:
http://english.barota.com/
but you DO have to be a member. I don't think that you can do it from outside of Korea as you need your ARC number. |
Great? I don't know about great. No link to where to actually sign up, and the English explanations are really confusing.
Apparently I've signed up for a card through the Korean site. I had to pay 10,000W for it and it won't get to my house for 10 days (one of my co-teachers had to help me). I'm really hoping that once it gets here I can do everything in English on the English site. |

| I guess I meant "great" for booking tickets, not for signing up. To sign up, I just went to the train station and asked for the form. They helped me fill it in (it was many moons ago and the form wasn't in English), took my 10,000 and gave me my card. I recently was in Seoul Station and decided to ask if I could link my credit card to my KORAIL card so I could pay on-line. She didn't help me with THAT, but told me that all old cards expire on July...um...17 I think, and she gave me a new card plus a refund of the 10,000! |

Oh - it's good to know that once I can get online to book tickets it will be easy . Hopefully I'll get my card soon, and it will be the right card! |

i have a membership card but got it a couple of months ago - haven't heard about a "new" card -
one thing - at the time i got my card you had to have a KOREAN credit card to book a reservation - and if you don't pay for your reservation it will cancel within a few minutes -
so anyone know if this has changed, i.e, are they accepting other credit cards now?
when i applied for my korail card, we had a long discussion about the difficulty foreigners have with this so maybe they've tried to be a little more user-friendly - especially since, as another post said - yes, there are a LOT of empty seats on the KTX most of the time - it's not comfortable (little leg room) and it's not really a bullet train, it just makes less stops. i heard it was a big scandal when it was built.
