Al-Qaeda claims suicide bombing in Algeria
Quote: |
Compiled by Daily Star staff
Thursday, July 12, 2007
A suicide bomber blew up a refrigerated truck packed with explosives inside a military encampment southeast of the Algerian capital Wednesday, killing 10 soldiers and wounding up to 35 in an attack claimed by Al-Qaeda's North African wing. The blast in Lakhdariyya village 120 kilometers east of the capital in the violence-plagued Kabylie region happened hours before the opening in Algiers of the All Africa Games, a prestigious sports event regarded as Africa's Olympics which Algeria is hosting. |

Al -Qaeda's No. 2: Jihad against Pakistan
CAIRO (AP) Al-Qaeda's No. 2 issued a new videotape on Wednesday calling for Pakistanis to join the jihad, or holy war, in revenge for the attack by Pakistan's army on a radical mosque.
Ayman al-Zawahri's 4-minute, 24-second address was entitled "The Aggression against Lal Masjid" and entirely focused on the recent clashes between Islamic students and Pakistan's army at the mosque.

The video was released by al-Qaeda's multimedia branch, as-Sahab. Its authenticity could not immediately be confirmed, but two U.S.-based terrorism monitoring groups also reported it.
"Muslims of Pakistan: your salvation is only through Jihad," al-Zawahri said in the video, which was subtitled in English. |

Poor JooJoo, you are blissfully ignorant.
4. Terrorists do not check the passports of their random western targets. Especially when they are trying to destabilize a local government by driving out all western tourists. Kill 'em all is all they want. They killed some random western tourists in Yemen.
3. Pakistan assisted the US in ousting Bin Laden from his hard won home base in Afghanistan. So, of course they're gonna be active in this neighborhood enemy of theirs. (And the US invasion of Afghanistan was legitimate self defense and not intervention, although the Congress should have issued a formal Declaration of War as required under the constitution.
2. The UK is in Iraq, Joo, in case you haven't looked. So, they are angry and will do anything that can stir up trouble there. The UK is, after all, an enemy of Al Qaeda.
1. Now you're getting to the recruitment activities of Al Qaeda. In order to obtain funding and volunteers, Al Qaeda must be seen as the defender of all opressed Muslems everywhere; as the leader in the war of liberation of the Moslem world. So, they have to have activities outside the scope of their real objectives.
This is a propaganda based effort for recruitment and fundraising. It is advertising and PR for terror.
So, what do they fight for? They fight to have a country where they (Bin Laden and his top cadre) can rule. BL wants to be a king somewhere. He wants to win. That's all. Then he wants to return to his homeland, Saudi Arabia, as the great liberator and leader and be king there. Following that, he would seek to make peace with the outside world while consolidating his power base inside SA. He and his henchmen would create a religious, personality based dictatorship and attempt to rule and survive.
Your nonsense about the Caliphate shows that you have been taken in by their propaganda, just like the foolish, radicalized children who follow Al Qaeda and blow themselves up.
Many of our leaders are unable to fathom the real world, and that is why we have gotten into the mess we are in today. |

To be honest is Algeria Western friendly? I don't see the logic in causing terror and destruction there. Perhaps someone can enlighten me as I don't know much about that country. |

Well, back in the '90s they had that miltary coup against the Islamic party that had won the elections. If I recall correctly, that coup was openly supported by the French, and other western powers were happy to just look the other way. So, if I'm correct in thinking that the guys in power now are the successors of the people who led the coup, then yeah, they could probably be considered pro-western, or at least anti-Islamic fundamentalism. |

As for the topic of this thread:
The more accurate question would probably be...
"Group setting off bombs in Algeria claims to be part of Al Qaeda. Why?"
And the answer...
"Because it gets them more media play than if they just admitted to being a bunch of two-bit losers with more bombs than brains." |

How much assistance did Pakistan really give? They seem to be pretty lax on letting Al Qaeda friendly militants take on India don't they?

Right and Rushdie has nothing to do with it?
Of course there was the Bali bombing which had nothing to do with Iraq but it happend anyway. Care to say why?

Only Saudi Arabia? In fact Bin Laden gave Afghanitan the name of the Islamic emerate of Afghanistan.
Saudi Arabia is part of it. But it doesn't stop there.

Oil is a big part of it. one thing we could start doing is investing in alternative energy and raising the gas tax. |

actully Al Qaeda's number two said that Islamic Mahgreb officially joined Al Qaeda a while ago.

In September 2006, both Ayman Al-Zawahiri and the Salafist Group for Call and Combat in Algeria proclaimed that the group was joining Al Qaeda. In destabilizing the Yemen government? Yes.
You surely could not have meant Spain.

Bali bombing was dones by members of Jemaah Islamiyah. They want strick Islamic law imposed on Indonesia and other parts of Southeast Asia. Australian tourists were said to be targeted for Australian efforts in East Timor.

The Algerian government has been at war with Islamic extremists in the country for two decades now. |

How much of South East Asia?
Quote: |

Afghanistan?
and in Morrocco?
And in Yemen?
Egypt?
Lebanon?
Pakistan?
The Kashmir?
Saudi Arabia?
Iraq?
Philippines?
Somalia?
Chechnya/ Dagastan?
Notice that Al Qaeda also declared war on India.
Not such a small area we are talking about is it? Kind of looks like a map of the Caliphate - doesn't it?
Spain is already on their list. Though probably not until the mideast is conquered.
Prediction : it is only a matter of time before Al Qaeda puts Thailand on its list.
England might be next. There is a group called Al Majaroun.
And if a nation trades or has diplomatic relations with a nation that they don't like, or votes at the UN the way Al Qaeda doesn't like or if they print materials that they don't like then that nation will be a target.
Remember that Bin Laden blames the US for low oil prices and says that the west owes 600 trillion (that is trillion , not billion ) dollars in compensation for the crusades.
While I don't think AQ is going to be able to establish the Caliphate anytime soon , it is pretty clear they will keep fighting until they get it or until they and their supporters are wiped out.
Al Qaeda doesn't believe in compromise. and it is stupid to think that if the US does things that AQ demands that AQ won't come up with a new list of demands the next day. |

Yeah, but might this not just be a case of Wadud proclaiming himself as affiliated with AQ, and AQ being happy to go along with the announcement because it makes it look like the organization is really expanding?
I'd be curious to know if there is any group of Sunni Muslim terrorists anywhere in the world whose claims to be part of AQ have been denied by central office. |

But that's just it. What is Al Qaeda exactly? Isn't it now exactly the way you describe it, with people claiming affiliation who have similar goals even though communication between Zawahiri and OBL and the new guys is probably pretty rare? |
