I have noticed that I still need to present my passport for odd non-government things within Korea. So I am wondering whether you folks have needed to bring your passport when traveling within Korea for anything.

Legally, you are required to carry your ARC or your passport ( immigration act ).

Some businesses do not recognise your ARC (because our numbers do NOT fit into their computer systems) as a valid Korean ID and ask for your passport (banks, DL office, phone connections).

Thanks.

Yes, I carry my ARC card in my wallet everywhere.

But I would rather not be carrying my passport when gallavanting around the countryside, or stashing my clothes at a jimjilbang - that sort of thing.

So I am wondering whether I might actually need my passport, instead of my ARC card, for something when travelling.

One thing I was wondering about was for renewing my membership at Costco.

No you don't need to carry your passport. Its a good idea to memorize the number though. Most places are happy with an ARC or a passport number. I've been living in Korea 3 years and I've only had to show my passport at the airport and at the bank (to wire money). I don't even have to show it at the bank anymore b/c they know me. Just carry your ARC. I don't even do that about 1/3 of the time though.

I've only carried my passport to go to the DMZ.

NO matter which country I am living in - I keep photocopies of my passport face page, current visa - and residence permit - in my wallet.

I've never had officials, police, or even hotel people - question the photocopies.

That way I don't have to worry about losing them.
