I looking budget hotel/hostel recommendations for Ho Chi Minh, Nah Trang, Hue, Hanoi and Halong Bay.

There are a couple of great sites (see below) with hotel info and there seems to be loads of choices. In light of this I figured I'd tap the collective resources represented here and see what rises to the top!

So throw 'em out!

How much are you thinking per night here?

In Hue, stay in the Binh Duong III. You get a massive room, a computer with internet, full gigantic bathroom, and a great balcony for $18 a night.

In Saigon (hcmc) stay at the guesthouse california. It is $10 us a night. The room is nice (aircon, fans, satellite tv, very very clean, a kitchen to cook in if you want, free broadband internet, nice people running the place who actualy did ny laundry for me!) and it is in walking distance to Pham Ngu Lao for nightlife but just far away that it isn't crazy loud either.

In Hoi An, there were a number of places that were good and cheap. I would recommend staying on the outskirts of the old town rather than inside t just because it's cheaper. I will look up the name of the place I stayed at, it was cheap $12 per night, clean, had ac, had a rooftop pool and included a great breakfast. less than a 5 minute walk from the old town.

For Hanoi- unless you want to stay in a crappy place for 5 bucks a night (some people do) do not book a place through a Vietnamese travel agency. Just land inthe old quarter and check places out when you get there. Once you find a decent place you should be able to fine a god boat trip for Halong bay. Stay on the boat or on Cat Ba, do not stay in Halong as there is nothing there besides Chinese sex tourists and Thai massage parlours.

In Nha Trang any clean place on the beach wll do as you will probably be spending all your time on the beach.

I'm going to Vietnam for almost a month and don't plan to research anything. Is that foolish?

I didn't do any research/booking when I went to Thailand for a month last year and I swear it was the best way. I talked to locals/other travellers when I arrived and got all the best info. that way, plus I wasn't committed to hotels etc so could be spontaneous. I also got all the latest info. about places that you don't often read about online/or in lonely planet....

I assume Vietnam will work the same way? I mean, its not so busy that i will be Hotel-less is it?

Nam' can be done quite easily with little preparation. Though a guidebook is a must imho.

Basic rules for Nam...

1) When walking close to the street, never carry your valuables on the street side of your body.

2) When booking hotel rooms, ask if there are any service charges or 'taxes' added to the room rate.

3) Wear earplugs to drown out the "hey, motobai?...where you go?...motobai?....hey!...you go musea?...it long way....i take you" x1000
