You can, like, totally see it on Google Maps and everything!

Personally, I think there are two schools of thought on Itaewon:

Some people want to go there regularly, and some people don't.

Personally, I think the subject of Itaewon needs to be enshrined as one of the great ESL Cafe subjects of polite conversation. Like such classics as the appeal of western women compared to that of Korean woman, and the fond relations between Canada and America.

Who wants to start a petition?

You can bronze discussion board threads, right?

Itaewon fun fact: If you walk along Itaewon road from Noksapyeong subway station, you may eventually come across Itaewon subway station.

Eerie!

I agree. Great variety of food there, but that's all. The motels are shockingly low quality.

I feel dirty in Itaewon no matter what time of the day or night I'm there.

I judge the quality of foreigners by how often they go to Itaewon. BFF (best foreign friend, people) goes about 4 times a year. High quality. Old coworker goes every Friday and Saturday night. Low quality.

Quite the broad generalization.

My school is in Jamsil. They don't give me an apartment; only housing allowance with no key money. I don't have the twenty million won it would take to get a furnished apartment anywhere near Jamsil, so I live in Itaewon where they key money is, in some places, practially non-existent.

Because I live here I go to the restaurants quite frequently.

Does this necessarily make me scum? No? I'm sure there are many others you judge as scum who are in the same situtation I'm in, not to mention the other explanations that may circumvent your 'Itaewon scum theory'.

No Itaewon= High Quality
Itaewon= Low Quality.
Logic isn't your specialty.

Yep. I know.

Dude, "scum" is quite a strong word. One I never used.

Also note I said "by how often they go". Living is not going. Now, I would hold out for a job where I didn't have to live in Itaewon, but that's just me. Choices, my friend, choices.

No, but Having an Opinion is.

Calm down man, what do you care about my opinion for?

A strong opinion about Itaewon - good or bad - is usually suggestive of the observer having lived a stunningly uneventful life.

I kind of agree with Altavistic about people who go every weekend though. That's a good litmus test....but then again, so also is hating Itaewon. Either of the two = butthole.

I don't hate Itaewon because I've never been. I find everything I need here in Songtan. I've been invited to go clubbing there but it's nearly 2 hours away, and the pull isn't that strong.

I don't understand the appeal, and really have no strong desire to go. Maybe one day before I leave Korea...

I'd agree with that.

A lot of the people who diss Itaewon must have lived very sheltered lives in very uneventful places where everyday was nice, white and middle-class.

I grew up on the wrong side of the tracks so I see Itaewon as a pretty normal urban area where the normal routine of drinking, streetfighting and whoring goes on. But those things are just a small part of Itaewon. That bit that happens after midnight. Most of Itaewon, most of the time, is respectable. But, middle-class wussies need something to fear..........

Add in the factor that it's probably the only place in Korea where a decent selection of Western goods and services can be had.
