I hope none of you bought beef from this Gwangju Lotte Mart this week. I've been saying for years now that I think Korean farmers are over-subsidised and coddled by the government, whose support gives them the time to get up to this kind of thing (remember Hong Kong WTO protests?). Seriously though, what kind of society allows this kind of *beep* to fly (pardon the pun)? Maybe it's high time the US started asking for a bit of reciprocity when it comes to market access.

I think it is time for American car makers to start loading piles of cow shit into every hyundai that rolls into america....

I can't believe the US government takes this at times....they really could go and eye for an eye and Korea would pull their heads in very quickly

I bet they weren't even arrested.

It's a pity they just don't stick to cutting their fingers off when expressing their hatred of anything foreign.

Spoiled crybabies. The agriculture industry has been sheltered by the government with protectionist policies for so long, they just can't play with the big boys.

Korea needs to let go of the past, embrace their comparative advantages (technology, heavy industry) and get over it.

I can see how it's hard to do so, considering the CEO of Samsung is only generation away from the plow.

That being said the agricultural industries of the US and Europe are just as bad. What I said for Korean farmers goes for them too.

Korea needs more beef! Heck, meat of all varieties is in very short supply. I go to stores like Homeplus and Emart and they have very little beef, sometimes there is none available.

You got thousands of people shopping in a store that may only have 5 to 10 pounds divvied up in tiny packages for about 10,000 won each on a good day. This is absurd!

Where's the beef? You would think they would have more since they can get it from Australia where plenty of beef is produced. I hear about Lottemart, but none of those in my local area.

How much American beef did you get for 40,000 won at Lottemart?

Indeed. I don't seem to remember seeing too much Australian or Argentine beef on supermarket shelves in the States.

Like to see those farm boys try throwing their crap at the minister responsible for re-introducing American beef to the Korean market. He'd meet one or ten of those riot cops and their "shields".

The farmers have been raking in huge profits for years now and they don't want the gravy train threatened. You watch...within 6 months a Korean will contract mad cow disease from Am. beef. The crap throwers' brother too.

Whatever...I buy Aus beef from Costco.

I like Korean beef, but I'm now tempted to head to Lotte Mart right now to get a steak. I'll be able to see the difference since I last bought a steak (Korean beef) on Tuesday.

Here I go.

On second thought, screw it. I ain't travelling round trip for like an hour or more altogether just to get a steak that tastes the same.

Next time I'm there I'll get one though.

The Metropolitician has a good discussion of it here, and of the nature of protest in Korea in general. You have to read his own personal experience of a protest a few weeks ago too, it's just unbelievable:

http://metropolitician.blogs.com/scribblings_of_the_metrop/2007/07/hot-fuzz-sunday.html

I like his point that the poor guys working at Lotte Mart literally don't deserve this crap. It doesn't matter what I think of a protestor's message, but they have to direct their protest at the people responsible, not take out their anger on people who have nothing to do with it.
