Actually there are a lot of GI's hanging around various parts of town. Not all GI's are bad - some of them pick up the language pretty quickly and seem to love Seoul's night life.

But.

Itaewon. Stay away from this area kids. Setting this place up as a Seoul tourist attraction is a ridiculous joke. The only people that actually go to this place are:

a) Hip-hop maniac shoppers
b) Piercing maniacs
c) whores
d) bartenders
e) english teachers (not to degrade anybody)
f) MP's (military police)
g) whores
h) Sgt. Joe Black
i) whores
j) whores

To be fair, Shinchon/Hongdae has a good number of foriegners but surely a number of them are mild-mannered tourists (Japanese, Canadian, English) or English teachers, or exchange students - quite different from all that ruckus at Itaewon. No wonder Hongdae clubs banned all U.S. military personnel.

"mild-mannered Canadians" in Korea!! Laughing Laughing Laughing

You're new here, aren't ya. Korea has to be the biggest magnet for the lowest form of Canadians out there. Sorry brothers, not all of ya, but come on, a good number of us here are complete idiots. Hell, when I first came here I was a young, drunk, loud, annoying Canadian too!

Itaewan in unique in Korea..not like all the other areas of the city which all start looking the same..
I think its interesting as hell...sure, its not my favorite place but it is NEVER boring...

I love the mix of ecclectic people: prostitutes, trans, GI's, Nigerians, Koreans and other foreigners.....its great^^ Anyway,,they're only 'WHORES' because you call them that.....they're just people trying to make a livling like you and I. If you have a problem with them - ignore them.

I've had some really interesting conversations with prostitutes (not 'whores') on the street, I have stopped and talked to one sitting down on the side of the road for about 30 minutes, she was really friendly.

Geez OP, what a dry old complainer you are Shocked

Yup. This week's "new guy comes to Seoul for the first time, walks into Gecko's and declares 'Itaewon sucks'" thread.

If you know where to look, Itaewon has the some of the best bars in Korea. There's plenty of trash, don't get me wrong. You just have to sift through it to find the gems.

There's also something to be said for trash.

I think so, anyway.

As I've said on the other 614 Itaewon threads, I personally don't like it there and will never go there on purpose. But, in it's defense, if somebody says "the only people who go to Itaewon are" and then lists 7 different groups of people, I'd say that's a fair bit of diversity (that undermines the only).

There are probably as many, if not more whores in the Sincheon/Hongdae area. You just haven't learned where to look. Come back when you've been in country for at least a year and then you might change your tune.

Don't diss Itaewon because it's about the only place in Korea where you can eat authentic foreign cuisines.

Outback, Pizza Hut, and TGI Fridays all taste like expensive mall food.

Tired of my bibinbaps, kimchi chiggaes and samgetangs, I am eating a lot in Itaewon nowadays.

Itaewon's okay, I guess. But at night, it gets a little too macho for my tastes. I remember the first time I was there, I saw some military guys who looked like gang-bangers. One of them saw a Korean woman and said, "I f#%kin' hit that sh@*! " But I'm sure that Korean people say mean things on the streets, too. It's just that I can't understand them.

I'm not a big fan of Gecko's, or for most foreigner bars, for that matter. I went there one time, and it's too sordid for my tastes. I saw two foreigners fighting, and then I saw a couple getting it on. If you're at the point where your hand is down the front of someone's pants, you might want to take it to a love motel.

But I agree, it's nice to get a change of pace, foodwise. I had breakfast at that Rocky Mountain place. But my friends didn't tell me that it's a Canadian place. I got stuck watching a hockey game. ZZZZZZ

As much as Itaewon sucks, where else can you see Nigerians selling blow, Muslims wandering around with cell phones, and crazy ajoshis selling overpriced international phone cards next to 70-year old prostitutes all on the same sidewalk?

It's fun as hell once in a while. It's a place I love to hate. And as a poster mentioned above, there are some great places hidden around Itaewon. And the food can't be beat. 2 words: Indian buffet. Also there's a great chess store there with wicked hand-made dragon-carving chessboards if you're into chess, and all kinds of imported goods. And 70-year old toothless whores.

And where else can you get insulted by drunken monkey GI's and be accosted by military police as an English teacher?

Itaewon rules but I phucking hate it.

I'm friends with a bunch of Nigerians and have never heard of any kind of that talk. I don't think it's too common...?

i dont mind it, it has gotten way better in recent years. good resturants and decent bars especially in the 3 alley pub area.

defintely some parts to be avoided (anywhere near the hills especially) but overall not a bad way to kill an evening
