Older subway squat toilets. Even the hwajangsil adjummas don't go near them. Next time you find one, look REALLY closely into it. But be warned, you will not be the same person afterwards.

| Probably the worst blights on Seoul's landscape are the neighbourhoods being torn down to make way for high rise apartment buildings. The largest area is next to Gongdeok Station. There's another one near Sindaebang Samgeori Station too. Just look for brick apartments with the windows smashed out and large piles of rubble. |

| Namdaemun. I know that old-style markets have a nostalgia all their own especially in an age of the perfect circularity that department stores and malls and supermarkets represent. But Namdaemun is a hole. |

However, these neighborhoods can be beautiful at the same time. In my case, my wife's family owns an apt building in Bulgwang. Samsung is tearing the neighborhood up this summer, giving my wife and I, her brother, and her parents each relocation money (we don't live there, but I will invest the money elsewhere).
When construction is completed, Samsung is giving 3 apartments projected to be worth 450,000 dollars each (opinion of independent real estate offices) to everyone, and within 3-4 years worth up to 700,000 dollars.
Ugly? Not in my eyes. Go to work, boys! |
