I have camp for the next 2 weeks, from 8:30 - 11:30. My teacher insists that GPOE mandates that I stay until 5 PM. And despite the fact I've called GPOE and gotten word that it is the "school decision" as to whether I stay later, he still wants me to stay.
There's a section in my contract that says, "when things aren't EXPLICITLY spelled out, it is the school's discretion to make decisions based upon the co-teacher's concerns". I told him, keeping me at school is a hinderance to worker morale and job satisfaction - asking him to allow me to leave after camp.... And he again refused. He's also refused to talk to the vice principal and the GPOE head about this.
So boiled down to its essence, the school is essentially holding me prisoner. The point is, I don't want to be sitting around for 4 hours with NOTHING TO DO. I have no work that needs attention. I got on the ball during my spare time during the past few weeks and completed all neccesary camp material.
I've left school today right after camp, with no intention of coming back until Wednesday (for the 2nd day of camp).
My question is: I realize they could fire me for leaving early without permission. What are the consequences? What would happen to my indemnity deposit? Would they have to give notice? What of pay, and all that?
Keep in mind, I'm on an F-4 visa. I'm not worried about getting deported - I'm more or less wondering if they need to give a warning - i.e. so that I can find another job. |

Your school is not holding you prisioner ... they are just holding you to the terms of the contract ... Which for us may well mean having to sit at school with nothing we have to do ? ... That is simply the contract ... Unless our school requires otherwise ... But then I know that if I am allowed to leave early after my camp starts ... I will need to be able to show / explain what I did while not at school during work hours ... Which is precisely what KT's need to do ...

What are your ages? Unless he's significantly older than you (i.e. he's your 'senior') it's just not common custom for him to order you around to such an extent.
I'd just turn it around on him. Find something you can do - like research - and stay til 6 or 7 PM. Or leave for three hours after lunch and then come back until 6 or 7. You'll out-flank him on all accounts, look like the better employee putting in more face time, and make him look like a knob for trying to make you stick to his hours. |

If it really bothers you that much tell them exactly how you feel. Just be forewarned it could lead to a deteriation of the relationship you have with your school. If this does not bother you then by all means stick to your guns and just not do it. The worse thing they can do is fire you.
Now, I am not a public school teacher so please take this for whatever it is worth. But if you do not see a bunch of KTs lounging about school, I cannot see a reason why you should not be allowed to go home.
Good luck to you! |

Doesn't your camp have specified hours...like the maximum is 20 hours a week? |

You know, the thing that really bugs me is that I never whine about anything at my school. I always work diligently and work as hard as possible. And this is such a small request on the big scheme of things and the fact they're not granting it - makes me realize the coteacher is on nothing more than a 'power trip'. He's basically saying, "yeah I could send you home, which would make you happy and make a lot more sense than you sitting around for 4 hours with nothing to do ... but I think I'll make you stay, because I can." |

Yeah the total "camp hours" (in the classroom) is under 20 hours (8:30-11:30, 4 times a week) ... so I don't think that contract clause has much bearing on this situation. Unless that clause means "total time at school". |

I have camp from 9-4 so I don't have much pity for you but I do agree that that's bunk.
Take it higher up the food chain if necessary. I wouldn't bother though. I'd just bring in a DVD and sit there at work and watch it. But then again...the 4 hours you are sitting around is paid or unpaid because that does make a difference I think... |

You shut up. Just because you're willing to bend over and take it in the as* doesn't mean I am. It takes 2 parties to make a contract, and 2 parties to agree to keep it kosher. |

if you don't like it approach the principal yourself and ask (saying this because you have a F4 visa so you know some Korean right?) if you're not willing to do that then stay at school the extra 4 hours.
and really you can't complain much unless you're able to work out some sort of plan with your school. if your coteacher decides to keep you, there's really not much you can do. |

Hahahahaha!
Yeah! Don't sign it, but too late. Hell! Better yet, since you have F-4 visa. Just say fork it, quit, and get another job.
Before you quit, use up all of your sick days you have 15 days right? |

One would presume that you can read English and that you read your contract before you signed it.
So far you are the one in the wrong.

With any luck they will fire you and there will be no more problems. |

Did you ask what this teacher wants you to DO during that time? I mean, you said you had a bit of free time and got all the camp materials together already...perhaps, since the time he is asking you to stay is contracted time that you are getting paid for with your base salary, he wants you to actually do some preparation, perhaps for the next semester? Maybe it is a subtle or not-so-subtle way of telling you that you need to do more prep?
Ask him what you are supposed to do during that time. Maybe he isn't intending to make you waste the time -- perhaps there is a reason beyond a "power trip." Perhaps not. Ask him. |

I agree with the OP.
Anytime someone wants you to sit around with your thumb up your ass for four hours a day, that person is just a fuckwit. Contract or not. |
