I really don't know why you would hand money like that to a cashier. It probably puts them off. You're a teacher and they're cashiers. You have the upper hand. It's the same as handing money to a child.

Plus it's not even really expected anymore.

I've just trained myself to do it without thinking, to be on the safe side. I don't really know what they expect, and they don't know I'm a teacher. Also, I have an overactive "nice" gland.

Don't get me wrong. I know what you mean. If the shopkeeper is an old lady or man I can see it. But I actually try not to do it anymore since a couple of my adult students (a teacher and an engineer) told me that it's really something that's on the outs and not expected.

I figure restaurant or shop owners have a lot more money than me. A lot of times they're the owners.
