Hollywood action.
The Turks even as part of NATO never once stopped a Soviet ship from going through the Dardenelles. As a matter of fact, that is what the Crimean was was mostly about.

freethought,
not to harp on this side issue too much, but I find it politically convenient when people rip the Conservatives on the environment. Their predecessors, the Chretien/Martin Liberals, had what many analysts believe to be the worst environmental record of any government in a developed country. As you know, emissions rose by 35% under the Liberals and only a piece of paper(Kyoto) was ever signed. No action was taken and nothing was accomplished. Save your praise for Her Majesty's opposition. I find it sad that the Tories have become the whipping boy on this issue. (Here's one reason: http://www.thestar.com/News/article/233780)
65% of Canadians don't support the Conservatives? When has a federal party ever enjoyed more than 40 or 45% support? You go to middle class Canada and ask about the environmental, they are going to say that they want more action. But they will never accept implementing the impossible(Kyoto). Canadians care about the environment but, as usual, they sit in the centre and want a balance with the economy. Once you put the reality of $2/litre gas out there, support for environment drops.
Regarding sovereignty, I think what Harper is doing is about all we can do. It's about demonstrating that we will not give up on the North. Russia's most recent claim to the North means that Canada must do something. I don't envision us getting in a battle with the Russians, but us asserting our sovereignty by adding ships sends a strong message to the Russian government. You may trust them, but I'm still not sold. We can't afford to give up on the North. We shall see how it plays out.

The Russians are staking their claim of Siberia. Not on the Canadisn side of the ice cap. The Us and Canada have s a little dispute of the seabed off Alaska/Yukon. |

The irony...
Read up on it yourself. You're talking about pre-WW1 history.
The strait was demilitarized in 1920 by the Treaty of Sevres. It also allowed foreign ships to sail through it. The strait was returned to Turkey in 1923 by the Treaty of Lausanne, but it allowed foreign warships to sail through it. Turkey refused and militarized the strait. According to the Treaty of Montreux of 1936, Turkey holds the right to prevent ships from non-Black Sea nations (Turkey (of course), Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Russia, and Georgia) from sailing through the strait. |

Yes, and Russia is and the USSR was a Balck Sea nation. They could stop the US from going through, or Britain.
You might take a little tiptoe through the tulips of the law of the sea, I did quite a few years back when I took an "Admiralty" course in third year law school in good oold Canada. |

Abolutely. But I think the date should be Dutch. The USA is already spending such tremendous sums killing Iraqis everday, it (he?) can't really afford to pay for the whole date. Capiche? |

The OP's idea is not the first:
Quote: |
Fifty-Four Forty Or Fight!
Alaska: the 49th State of Mind
By Sam Taylor
Introduction
Sometime during the presidential campaign of 1846, candidate James Knox Polk declared that the border between the Oregon Territory (which included everything north of the present California border) and what was to become Canada should be set at the 5440th parallel, where the present southerly border of the pigtail of Alaska sits. The cry, fifty-four forty or fight rang out across the land, implying the US would go to war for what is now much of British Columbia.
A worthy idea at the time that would have been ruinous in ours.

But if Canada gets America pregnant on a Dutch date... what would the child be? |

We need that passage to gain gold, spices, and silk from China and India!
Time to put them CANDU reactors to good use and start building some nukes. |

It's time to put the America back in North America.
NEWSFLASH: 90% of Canadians have moved to within 100 miles of the US border. The Northern Barbarian Threat is real. Our border is undefended. Every day, thousands of Canadians enter the US and are completely undetectable. We've tried every possible diplomatic solution but the Canadians refuse to stop selling Brian Adams Cd's in the US. We need to invad..redeploy the US Army to Canada. |

I guess you were absent on the day that they studied about 'argumentum ad verecundiam'. |

Ask the Iraqis. They've already been screwed by the USA. |

This massing of the northern barbarians does cause a few sleepless nights. What is their ultimate aim? If the orders for invasion come from their tribal chiefs in a place rumored to be called "Ottawa", who is to stop them?
Aside from a few drunk Wisconsin/Minnesota/Michigan hunters with poor beer-induced aim, and a bunch of friendly stoners on the western stretch of the border (who try as they might to get all of the invaders stoned, just don't have adequate supplies), we are truly defenseless. Not to mention many of our Eastern border peoples are rumored to be genetically indistinguishable from the barbarians, comprising a very real fifth column.
Maybe we should build a series of "enticement camps" with curling houses and Tim Hortons stocked with thousands of gallons of beer scattered every few miles as a defensive measure.
That could buy us a few weeks in case the invasion begins. |

I think sports bars stocked with videos of every hockey game ever played plus an endless supply of free Molson's on tap would put the invasion on hold pretty much until the Rapture. And after that, who cares. The USA will be depopulated (and hot as Hell) anyway. |
