Glad I found this thread. I'm going to Vietnam for 3 weeks in August...flying into Hanoi and out of HCM city. With that much time, where would you recommend? I don't like shopping, crowds or big Hotels.
I would like to find some bungalo in the bush near a river/beach. Any recommendations? I don't mind roughn it^^ |
I spent 3 weeks there 2 years ago. In 3 weeks, we covered half the country. The North Part and the Central part, so maybe more than half. You are going to miss a lot if you try to travel the whole country in 3 weeks. The country is amazing aside from the people, which are a pain. There will be crowds absolutely everywhere, unless you find some really off the beaten track place. |

Hmmm, do you mean other tourists or the Vietnamese? |

The MOST dishonest and money-hungry I've ever encountered. But, stuff is cheap, great food, beautiful girls... not all bad |

| What's the deal with Visa's? We're heading to Vietnam for a couple weeks, do we need to get a Visa before we leave or can we pick on up upon entry? |

I went to Vietnam this past December for two weeks. We had to get our Visa's in advance. I don't think you can get one on arrival. There may be a way, but I'm sure it's a huge pain. Just get one before you go, it was easy anyways.
If you can only stay in one area, I'd recommend the north--Hanoi, Halong Bay, etc. I liked Hanoi much better than Saigon, although that's just me. Whatever you do, Halong Bay is a must see. |

Yes, there is a bit of the wild west about Vietnam- caveat emptor- buyer beware. You will be ripped off, the question is how often for how much.
That being said, I loved Vietnam, and really liked the people who didn't have an investment in my decisions. Make your decisions in advance, and don't be swayed by the BS'ers.
Vietnam is a beautiful country with a lot to offer. But, like India, poverty can do ugly things to people. You have to develop an ability to get by those who will try to rip you off, and see what is wonderful about places.
Of course, I'm from the U.S., and, trust me, there are people every where here trying to scam you and sell you something useless. Selective deafness is useful. |

I haven't been to Saigon (Ho Chi Min), but most of my friends say Hanoi is better and more cultural. I enjoyed Hanoi and made trips to other areas near there. Check out Nihn Bihn.
The Vietnamese people are some of the most dishonest people I have ever met. If you negotiate a price for something that you will pay for later, like a motorbike ride, dinner, etc., write it down. Even then they will still lie and try to rip you off. |
yeah, but the thing is, everything there is so frickin dirt cheap. it's more like you're ripping them off. |

Yes, a perspective often lacking here abouts. |
