I think the guarantee is noly for jobs in the country where you complete the course.

Well, a free cert for a course that costs more than $1000.

Are you/they saying that the course will cost you $1000 but they will give you a cert for free after completion?
Kinda deceptive isn't it? |

It is important to read the fine print before you begin any course of instruction. Good programs are out there, and they can be had for a reasonable price, but you must do your homework to make sure they offer what you need and want from a course...In the end, the allure of a program because it is advertised as being this or that will be outweighed by whether or not you felt you received what you were looking for in exchange for the money you spent on the program...You are seeing first hand that free doesn't always mean free... |

Bruce is still in Ban Phe, last I heard.
I took the course in 03.
It met my needs and put me at Level 1 for Korea public schools. |

Then TEFL Int'l is actually based out of Thailand and no some other country? I was not aware of this...I guess it does pay to do your homework if this is correct...Thanks for the information... |

Be advised, I did their BETT course in Bangkok and it was a waste of time and money. |

I do believe that Bruce and co have a degree program as well available via a university in India that you can take. 4 years to complete it part time though but it will get you a degree in the end which is what is required in Thailand. |

So, some say good and some say not. What cues does a TEFL ad give that the program might be worth looking into? This one goes so far as to offer distance learning, and that, to me, isn't yet legitimate enough to recommend even established universities. They have two different websites, the other one being the banner ad on here that says "TEFL International Supports Dave's ESL Cafe."
Of course, they do offer guaranteed jobs. Does that imply money back if you fail to get a job? Or is the field so wide open that of course you're going to get a job somewhere? I never hold my breath for money back, nor anything guaranteed. |

No, the course offers nothing. I recommend you look for another place that provides the BETT course. |

1. The best thing is to try and contact the program if you can get a reply from them...Many programs have email contacts that simply respond by automated correspondence, steer clear of them if you can...(send me a PM and I can recommend some who will actually talk with you...)
2. Be sure of what they mean exactly when they say distance learning...The greatest percentage of programs offering distance learning mean they will send you email correspondence work to do, with little useful support or tutorial help.
3. Be extremely cautious of programs with multiple websites...They may be in legitimate need of more than one website to promote their program, but in all likelihood they are just flooding the market with websites to give them the greatest number of hits and inquires when people are looking for a training source...Unfortunately, people are easily swayed when it comes to web presence...They figure if a company has 3 or more websites on the Internet, they must be legitimately good...Let the buyer beware, this is not the truth of the matter...
4. People who support a particular website just mean they are paying for advertising on the website they support...Advertising drives the markets and it is one way to get web traffic on your program site...Perhaps better than 70% of the people seeing an ad on this website and are interested in a TEFL training program will go to a website just because they saw it advertised here...That is how advertising works, but it really has no connection to whether or not a program actually offers a good educational package...
5. A number of universities around the world will accept the training taken by some TEFL training students for academic credit towards certain degree programs...This is not a new occurrence, as it has been happening around the world in other areas of study for several decades now...What must happen in order to see more of it happening with TEFL training providers is to have the establishment of an International accrediting agency that can work beyond the red tape encountered at present... Currently in Korea there are very few programs operating that actually have the legitimate status of recognition as educational providers for TEFL training...This is a valid recognition that would be comparable to accreditation from other countries...It is through this recognition that certain universities will accept credit in Korea, SO you should check out the credentials of the particular provider to find out what the possibilities for academic transfer of their training credits would be...
6. Within the EFL-ESL industry the only programs offering guaranteed jobs are those which have established a number of schools to move their students from the classroom into...This is how they can guarantee employment...Regarding employment, it is truly a wide open field and the student is probably better off seeking their own employment for a number of reasons...
7. Money back guarantees are virtually non-existent...The best thing is to find a provider that will give you a look at their program with a free lesson so you can get a feel for what is required...Many do not do this or are afraid to do this because if they do, people will take a look and say no thanks...There are some programs out there which will give you a guest look, so PM me and I can share who they are...
I hope this gives you a little more information about what you should be looking for... |
