When I first saw him I thought he was just another combat rocker. Then I realised the average Korean has never heard of The Clash. He was a male conscipt with long shaggy hair.

No, he's already done his regular service. Now he's doing his reserve time. Usually starts on a Friday and ends on Sunday. This goes on for quite a few years.

A la the Korean movie "Show me the Lighter" or something to that effect where the Korean adjusshi misses the last bus from his camp up north and gets chased all the way by gangsters to Busan. I thought it was pretty funny.

I once saw this Korean movie I liked. It was pretty cool. I think there was a girl and a guy in it, and then some other people were in it, too.

I've seen quite a few soldiers with blue sneakers or shirt untucked, unbuttoned with T-shirts underneath and stuff.

Even if they are just reservists, surely they could respect the uniform 'til they got home to change. Where's the pride?

Yeah, and they had like a surprise twenty minute noraebong segment where they all sang drunk. Never saw that one coming.

For some weird reason this reminds me of some Belle and Sebastian lyrics - A Century of Elvis Smile

My husband's reserve service has NEVER started on a Friday, it's always been starting on Tuesday and ending Thursday evening. Because it is mandatory service, his workplace can't fire him or dock his pay but I was under the impression it was always during the week. Once we were in Hong Kong during his service, and as a result instead of having to travel and stay away for 3 days, he served locally and it was for 5 days but he got to come home every night. But same thing, Monday to Friday. Even my students in the regular ROK military don't really work Saturday/Sunday.

I meant to say that this movie is applicable to the thread because the main character misses the his last bus after finishing reserve duty and the scenes unfold from there.

You would know better than me...but my Uni students usually go in groups and it's almost always been on a Friday that they're absent. Maybe they're getting together and BSing me! Laughing

I know they've never been gone for consecutive (teaching) days, ie. Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday.

I think it depends on their local reserve unit what days they serve.

How many years does hubby have to keep going?

He has 4 years more to go, they must do it for 6 years. I asked my hubby about the weekend thing, but he hadn't heard about it before. Admittedly, my Hubby grew up in Texas so his Korean friends are mostly Korean American, so it may be different depending where they serve. Smile

Hey, but who's counting! Laughing

He has a nice haircut, though, right? Wink
