I would say Springsteen is the gf of American gypsy urban-folk pop and Johnny Cash is the gf of country crossover pop.

But for "The Godfather" none other than the one and only James Brown.

Springsteen can keep the nickname the "The Boss".

Johnny Cash will always be, well "Johnny Cash".

Are honorifics necessary in music.

Without Robert Johnson the blues would have faded like disco.

Louis Armstrong...

If you want to know why, watch Ken Burns' "Jazz" about nine or ten times.

Gershwin, Porter, Ray Charles J.B, Hank Williams...all great, but godfathers?

No, it's pronounced Lewisss...capo del tutti capi...

Followed closely by Duke Ellington.

P.F.'s right. I'm a huge Springsteen fan, but Louis Armstrong single-handedly ushered in a whole new era of music. I'd also put Sam Cooke up there.

Without Stephen Foster, Woody Guthrie, Robert Johnson, Pete Seeger, or Lead Belly where would Bruce or Johnny Cash be?
