What's with all the spelling/grammar mistakes on this board? Almost every second post on every thread is littered with errors - not just typos, real, bona fide mistakes (e.g. "anedode" rather than "anecdote").
I think it's a bit troubling that native speaking individuals consistently make such obvious errors, and then flame Koreans for their use (or abuse) of the English language. |

| Why should anyone expect university-educated English teachers to be able to write in English with clear grammar? |

WOW!
What an original post.
I have not seen another like it....
If it bothers you so much you have a few options:
A. Become a grammar nazi and point it out over and over again and gain the scorn of fellow posts
B. Become a sarcastic ass who spends your time combing through the posts ridiculing all those who make a MISTAKE...GASP!
C. Ignore it and be semi productive on the board
D. Do nothing about it and accept that people can and will continue to make mistakes....
You decide... |

I agree that the spelling on this board is pretty embarrassing, but the value of a native teacher is not that they can teach spelling. In the grand scheme, it's a pretty trivial skill.
Btw, how can you be sure that anedode is bona fide mistake? What makes you sure it's not a typo? |

You may have a point there - however I think "d" and "t" are pretty far apart from the keyboard
Sorry - I really don't want to be an asshole, and I'll try not to be a grammar/spelling nazi in future |

| I type really fast. Sometimes I miss keys. Since I'm not being graded on my grammar/spelling on this board I don't bother to go back and fix my errors. |

The only time I hear anyone "flaming" Koreans for their misuses of the language is when such uses are official: done by the government of Seoul, textbooks, advertisements, Korean slogans, corporate Korean slogans, etc. They spend alot of money on this stuff and still get it terribly wrong which is inexcusable given all the native english speakers here. The fact that it remains such a problem makes it worth flaming.
Do posters come on Dave's with the same motivations?
Do they come on Dave's pumping the same amount of money into their posts?
Do posters come on Dave's with dictionary in hand and check it religiously as they write?
Do posters on Dave's get paid each time they write something? |

| +1, OP. It irritates the hell out of me when English teachers make such glaring mistakes. I wouldn't trust a doctor who couldn't tell me the role of the stomach; why would I trust an English teacher who couldn't spell or be arsed to use at least reasonably-correct grammar? |

The 'teachers' incapable of constructing a grammatically correct sentence littered with primary school level spelling errors, and then the inevitable droves that will immediately come out to call you a grammar nazi upon correcting them are, to a certain extent, indicative of the severe dumbing down of Western culture through which the Internet plays a significant role. I suggest this work:
Although this book is obviously more broad in its scope, I think it is relevant to the discussion. |

Wow, indy, I agree with you for once!
Calling someone out on their errors doesn't make one a "Nazi." I think most people can tell the difference between glaring mistakes and typos. If I were learning another language I would certainly expect my teacher to have a good command of it and not to make such trivial mistakes as misspelling "definitely" or using "allot / alot" instead of "a lot." |
