Hi Everyone,
I'm sitting here puttering around and need some help. I have an hour nursery class (very very beginner) and the theme I'm to plan is "Animals". I normally like to have a game and a song. I'm thinking "Old McDonald" but am stuck for the game. My printer is broken so can't print pics or anything. I would be very appreciative of any suggestions. There are 30 kids in the class. Thanks!!

Wow, you do have the young ones, eh? I've got 5 year olds (Kindie) and some 4 year-olds. I virtually never play "true" games, however I do have one psudeo-game which is a benefit:


Go to a Korean book store and buy some flashcards. For between 7000 and 13,000 won, you can get a box of flashcards with both Korean and English, along with a picture. I have purchased 3 sets and they have been a tremendous help. Every week, I'd drill 5 to 8 flashcards in the kids heads. Now after 2 1/2 months, they know the box of 'em. They love to have me show them the cards one-by-one and they shout out what it is in English (mine don't have English on the front -- not that they can all read it anyway). It's like a game/contest to them. They go ape.

On another note, buy a book called, "Let's Chant/Let's Sing" and the tape, which is invaluable. It's part of the "Let's Go" series. It will cost you about 16,000 for both. I don't use the chants from it, but a lot of the songs are easy. Some might be a little tough for Preschool, but a lot are easy. There is an "ABC" song in there my kids beg to sing every day.

One game my three year olds always liked was animal charades. It does help to have cards though to ensure the kid doing the charade knows exactly what animal they are supposed to be. It can also evolve into animal follow the leader with all of the kids doing the animal actions with the leader after they have guessed the animal's identity.

I teach 3 classes of kindy animals daily. Kindy can be rewarding, but it requires 1) classes of 6 or less 2)good preparation and planning.3) break up the lesson almost every 5/10 mins with a game, song, or activity.

Ive taught the subject of animals many times, because kids always love it. Suggestions:
1) get the kids performing either to chants or in a game situation, the sounds and actions of animals.
2)Flashcards of animals are great- there are many card game variations possible.
3)20 questions:Preteach vocab and sentences. 1 kid thinks of an animal.Other kids guess what it is with q's like "is it big?" , can it fly etc.
4)So many language structures can be used with animals: how many, what colour, etc etc.
5) Pictures: either to color in or ask q's about are invaluable.

Awesome help guys! I've got them all written down for future use. I ended up putting up picks of animals and having the kids run to the station when I made the animal's noise. They seemed pretty thrilled to run and make funny sounds all in one day. Thanks again!
