So I was talking to a co-teacher and he happened to use the word "unique" in a sentence.
Only he totally mangled the pronounciation, something that will happen if your only encounter with a word is through the printed page.
He pronounced it with the accent on the first syllable, like "eunuch."
This led to some complications in the explanation of the correct pronounciation. But at least I saved him from potential embarrassment later.
Anyone else encounter some interesting mispronunciations? |

At my first hogwon the teacher kept saying "wh0re *beep*."
I couldn't figure out what she was saying and neither could the other NT.
"What?'
"Wh0re *beep*! Give me wh0re *beep*!"
Turns out she meant "whole sheet."
The same woman told us we were going to a cotton museum. We brainstormed a wh0re list of project ideas. She said nothing about our ideas.
We went to a cartoon museum.
This woman had her own hogwon at one point (she was a coteacher at this other hogwon) and had by far some of the worst English I've ever heard.

*laughing* Yea, me too but not anymore! Personally, I think it's ok spelled/spelt either way. That's the way of languages and how they develope. It's inevitable that even English will go the way of Latin. But by that time will be communicating through ESP or something'n...
....Huh?! Alyallen in my head?...You, you...wanna do WHAT?! TO ME?!?...you naughty, naughty lady. You even made me blush!
btw, ask a Korean to say, "Beethoven"....hilarious. For the longest time I couldn't make out what being said. |

yeppers, it doth matter my good lad...
Upon visiting her son in Korea my mother sat in on a class of mine where students had a Q&A with her. One petite little freshman asked my mum if I had taken her to the fu<l>k village. Never had I seen my mother's skin so pale and eyes so big....
Me?
Pissing myself in the corner..what else?
!shoosh,

Ice-land or Iz-land for island!
Student: "I went to Iceland for my vaction."
Me: "Wow!! How exciting! What was it like?"
Student: "Jeju-do is so beautiful!!"
When my students laugh at my pronunciation of their names, I write "Gwyneth Paltrow" on the board.... |
