Do the English and Korean language copies of Korean newspapers contain the same reports.

I read the English versions sometimes and some of the articles are pretty good. They at least try to highlight some problems in Korea. However do these articles only appear in the English version, or are they in the Korean editions too?

Thanks.

Still no reply.

Now i'm wondering if the article about Korea's failing dream of becoming the 'Hub of Asia' is in the Korean edition, or is it too anti-Korean to be printed in Hangul?

Many of the articles in the English papers are either cobbled together from wire reports or translated, but not always fully. And definitely the Korean papers can print pretty critical stuff. Check out my blog linked from my sig, plenty of accurately translated articles. Lots of stuff that doesn't make it into English.

It's funny, most people suspect that the Korean papers refuse to translate all the really bad stuff into English so it's ONLY available in Korean. Of course, that's not true either.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the most irritating conceit on this board is the idea that us westerners are the only ones wise enough to see the flaws in Korea that the simple-minded natives cannot.

I was recently profiled in the Chosun Ilbo in Korean and the story got like 2,600 replies so it was fairly prominent. But they didn't translate it into English because in my opinion I was pretty critical about Korea and it was not a "I'm a foreigner who loves Korea" type story.

And then recently I accused Korean banks of being racist when I wrote a column for the Chosun Ilbo about foreigners being denied international cash cards.

A week later I published a revised English version in the Korea Times and within hours Korea Exchange Bank was emailing me accusing me of wrongly "damaging their reputation." Funny how they didn't seem to mind when the same basic story first appeared in Korean.

I believe that the principle of face often determines what does and doesn't appear here in English. Arirang TV is a perfect example. Many Koreans love to read the dirt about their country but are less interested in the outside world knowing about it.
