Anyone know of any good Korean music to check out? I am not in Korea yet and am trying to learn the language a little before I get there. Listening to music in the language you are learning helps immeasurably, so what are some bands/artists I should check out.
I am into a lot of different kinds of music, but not rap, hip/hop, teen boy/girl bands, or techno. Just about anything else I can get into if it's good.
any ideas? With maybe some links to where I can hear or get it? |

Not sure what the forum rules are on this kinda stuff. I personally think some Korean music is the *best* out of the entire of Asia, you just gotta spend a long time finding the stuff which suits your personality. PM me what kinda stuff you like, and I'll sort some out.. |

I agree with the above poster in that it can be really good but also hard to find. One of my favorites is Clazziquai Project, who play a mix of bossa nova, electronica (not techno), lounge, and soul. Feel free to send me a PM as well. |

Give a listen to "We have Four Seasons"
However, I prefer what I'm listening to now...Peter Tosh Complete Captured...

I listen to a slightly narrower range of Korean bands. Here's my list of recommendations.
Rux (streetpunk band)
Suck Stuff (more eclectic streetpunk band)
Captain Bootbois (skinhead band)
Geeks (straight-edge band)
13 Steps (old school hardcore)
Vassline (metalcore)
Kingston Rudieska (bluebeat ska) |

I like:
Jaurim (and sometimes the singer Kim Yuna's solo stuff- she sings very clearly so it's good for learning Korean, I think)
Delispice (also sings clearly, catchy melodies and lyrics)
푸른 세벽 (Blue Dawn), real indie that gets experimental from time to time
이 상은 (Lee Sang-eun), female singer who's been around a while
장윤정 (Jang Yoon-jeong), female singer of catchy trot favorites
Kim Doo Soom, Korean folk singer
Peterpan Complex- cute, reminds me of Franz Ferdinand somehow
김광석 (Kim Kwang-seok), kinda poppy folk (a lot of compilations are out there as the singer is no longer alive)
Nell- though they do cross over into boy-band territory at times, and a few of their English choruses make me cringe
Loveholic- best of the big pop groups, in my opinion
Rollercoaster- very fun
Yoon Do Hyun Band
Cherry Filter- pop-punk with female lead vocalist
Crying Nut- Korean pop-punk pioneers
한영애 (Han Young-ae), really awesome female vocalist (I only have one of her albums, though)
Do a search for these on Youtube and many of them will be on there (I know that Delispice and Jaurim are for sure) |

97% of all Korean music is pure shiite, and the 3% that is good never gets any airplay on radio, tv or anywhere else for that matter. I guess you just have to look around for clubs which suit your style.
As for techno, don't worry, it doesn't exist here. |

Their first collective CD:
"The Steaming Piles of Achievement."
As Korean as pizza and about as palatable.
Samulnori rocks. |

Why don't you stick to your Jesus stories and leave reality for the rest of us? |

I agree with the assessments of the bolded groups/singers here.
Han Young-ae is definitely worth searching out. A real treasure. Her last album (Behind Time: A Memory Left at an Alley) was a reworking of popular songs from 1925 to 1955 in her style. You might also try to find some of her earlier work as a part of the Shinchon Blues Project.
She lives in Paris now, I'm told. |

I like Taobenli's recommendations. I would add 왁스(Wax), 달빛요정역전만루홈런(dal-bit-yo-jeong-yeok-jeon-man-ru-home-run) and 3호선버터플라이 (Sam Ho seon Butterfly)
OP is super keen on his studies - I admire your determination, but this will turn into burning hatred when your Korean exceeds mine after 6 months in Korea |
