|

So there were huge crowds and large rows of cops in riot gear today at the Yatap Kim's Club. Fights were happening, water bottles were being thrown, and it seemed like the aim of the large group was to essentially block the entrances while shouting slogans about something-or-other. After watching it slowly escalate for about ten minutes, and watching more buses full of cops showing up, I finally said screw it and went to Homever. Inside Homever, there were also rows of policemen sitting in a long row in front of the cashiers, looking bored.
Anyone know what on earth was going on? |

Could be about U.S. beef. There have been ugly protests at Lotte Marts too. |

Kim's Club, New Core Outlet and Homever are all owned by the same company. The Riot Police were sent in to bust up a "sit in" strike that's been going on for the past couple of weeks.
The strike has something to do with a bunch of p/t or temporary workers that were fired and are now demanding f/t work and benefits.
It's been on the K-news quite a bit. |

I was wondering what that was about. I've seen the sit ins at the Homever on the news. There was one going on at Cheonan Homever yesterday, but no riot cops. |

Yeah I saw the sit-in yesterday morning, but I was also there on Tuesday night and there was one going on. One of the workers inside Kim's club shuffled us to another exit that the demonstrators hadn't blocked yet.
Yeah....the cops in Homever were just sitting there against the caging looking like the could care less. |

The World Cup Stadium Homever has been shut down and boarded up for the last two weeks. Tons of riot cops, passionate bullhorn speeches, people in red headbands sitting outside chanting and raising their arms.
All I wanted is to buy my grapefruit juice. |

You've got it a little wrong....
they were full-time permanant workers(mostly cashiers) but have been sacked and rehired as part-time, non-permanant with no benefits to save the company money...
The obviously didn't like it so they went on strike.....
Doesn't look like things will change any time soon...
E land(who owns all of the 3 retail businesses) overstretched themselves a little when buying out Carrefour and saw it as a quick and easy way to save money...
i bet they have lost more money in the last 2 weeks then they would have if they had just have kept the workers permanant.
Good on them...we roll over to easy in the west at times. fight the good fight ajummas...
Might not be all good news though as there are whisperings that Eland might go bankrupt over this(hence the reason why the riot police are being brought in to break it up) and who knows what might happen... |

I've noticed riot buses in Yatap quite a few times over the last while. Once I counted 18 there at the same time. |

they have been all over the kim's club in jamwon-dong near the bus terminal for some time now too.
i'd be willing to bet that anyone working in the service industry in korea has a bit of a right to be p.o.'d about something. |
