At least, that seems to be the point the speaker is making in this series of videos posted here at Japan Probe.

Note the man is Korean. My assumption, based upon his claims, old age, and excellent Japanese, is that he has no desire to head home any time soon...

Interesting, but hopelessly biased.

Yes. It's especially noticeable in the last one. What does he mean by 'restoring the Samurai spirit' I wonder?

Koreans currently subscribe to a hopelessly biased nationalist version of history that leaves out inconvenient facts about the state of the Choseon kingdom, especially in its last years, but that's no reason to go completely the opposite direction and ignore everything that makes Japan look bad instead.

The American Empire civilized the 500 or so Native American First Nations. And if you don't believe it, just ask the descendents of the survivors.

Yup. The Spanish civilized South America. Ask the Incans and Aztecs.

I think the main question we need to be asking is this:

Do you think the guy has a Japanese wife? I've noticed over the years that getting some ass tends to make you more forgiving of the crimes of of your partner's society.

Difference of course is....

After declining in population, the native Korean population increased after the coming of Japan. In the Americas, the native populations did not.

___
Personally, I am amazed that the Koreans are still licking the boots of the Chinese to forget the wrongs done under the Qing Dynasty. Wrongs that led to the annexation of Japan in the first place.

I am more amazed that the present Korea people desire to kowtow to the Communist Chinese and ignore the present reality. That is ... it is China who is keeping the Korean Peninsula divided, not Japan.

Blaming Japan for Korea's present problems is not facing reality. However, it is good old fashioned Communist propaganda.

"The Japanese empire civilized Korea"

As one of the many who has been on the receiving end of Korean "civilization," I guess I'd have to say that they failed.

But as one who likes individual Koreans (is that an oxymoron?), I'd have to say that individual Koreans are still striving (both individually as well as members of the group) to move Korean civilization forward. And I love them for that.

I don't understand where you're coming from on this one.

What Qing Dynasty wrongs are you talking about, and how did they lead to the annexation of Korea?

Who exactly is kowtowing to Communist China, at least on this side of the DMZ?

Koreans blame Japan for a lot, but I've never heard them say they were responsible for the division of the peninsula. They quite obviously had no role to play there.

TWG:

I think that guy is Japanese, has a Japanese wife and kids, lives in Japan and has a shrine to Emperor in his bedroom closet. I might be wrong, but I think his is a Japanese name - maybe it's an idiosyncratic attempt at a romanisation of Korean - but that doesn't sound like a Korean name to me. That and he just looks Japanese.

Since the makers of this film are obviously biased (and the translators for that matter) - I wouldn't put it past them to misrepresent the author.
