Which one would you recommend and why? I'm in Thailand for two weeks and I'm buying my time between Phuket and Koh Phi Phi. Looking for recommendations as I've never been before. So far I'm thinking Kata or Karon (same area) from what I've looked at thus far. |

With 2 weeks, you should do both, but I recommend getting off Phuket most of the time. Koh Phi Phi is good for a few days, Phuket is good for a couple (a motorbike is fun around the island, too), the Similan Islands are amazing (if accessible this time of year) and a day or two in Phang Nga is nice. Hopping a plane to Chiang Mai in the north isn't a bad idea either. |

I was also thinking of busing it to Surathani (spl?) and then taking a boat to Koh Samui for a few days. I don't know how long that would take though and I'd rather spend as much time as possible on a beach rather than a boat or bus..... |

Kata and Kamala are the nicest beaches inho. I second what Bibbitybop said, Chiang Mai is worth a trip as well. |

I have no interest in staying in overcrowded Patong - but I do like to go there from time to time and enjoy the cheaper Western amenities that are available in larger quantity. For that reason I recommend Karon beach - the North end of Karon beach. You can enjoy the peace and quiet of Karon beach but you are still close to Patong . |

The weather should be better in Koh Samui. I'll be there in three weeks. |

I'm a huge fan of the Kamala/Surin/Bang Tao Beach areas - but I am biased, I live in the area.
Probably one of the best websites for the area north of Patong - and away from the tourist hoards, is www.PhuketGoldCoast.com |

I just spent a week at Kata beach - overrated if you ask me. It was ok, but nothing special.... it was clean but the water was rough (which is typical during the rainy season) and there were a lot of red flags for no swimming. We went out to the Phi Phi islands as well, now they were beautiful! only problem was the amount of tours that come and go at some of the beaches there. Karon seemed about the same as Kata, and Patong was just so busy! |

There's a cheap overnight boat from Surat Thani to Koh Samui and then on to Koh Phangan. It has a sleeper deck.
The faster (day time) boat takes 3 hours, but the overnight is an 8 hour trip if i remember correctly. |
