i'm from Virginia. i tell students i'm from Colorado simply because of the whole Tech thing. (i *did* go to high school in Colorado.) at any rate, i'm sure Virginia will come up.

anyhow, how did you all discipline students who mimicked gunfire, etc., after the shootings occurred?

(earlier i thought of making the students write letters to the families of the victims... not sure about that, though.)

I call out "OH NO!" and do a mock impression of a speed skater falling over.

Not a single student nor teacher even mentioned the incident once.

I have to say it....Who cares? All over the world everyday people are murdered. Your little shooting doesn't matter that much. Just ignore them and not mention yourself....I doubt they will mention it unless you do first.

My students are to young to do anything like that, but i would probably go ape scat on them. Tell them you believe all Koreans are killers. That if they or their family members ever came to America there would be hundreds of Americans waiting to get them as revenge. Tell them that every country in the world hates all koreans for what they did in Virginia.
Say that the Taliban knows how Korean school children make light of the Virginia Tech killings and that the Taliban will behead those Korean hostages for their mocking of Virginia Tech..

Be prepared to lose your job if you say all of this of course.

I am also from Virginia, and I went to Virginia Tech. I teach at a university, and my students have been really good about it when I mention where I'm from. They seem like they have a lot of compassion for me. I was more surprised by the reactions of the Korean professors here. When I tell them, they do the I don't know what to say right now, nervous 'ha ha' laugh. That really bothered me at first, even though I knew that's what Koreans do when they are in this situation.
But, if my students did something when I told them, I probably wouldn't do anything as far as punishment. I would try to explain to them that what they are doing is wrong, and they can do whatever they want after that.

They have pushed their buttons and they'll continue to test you. Why do your students deserve the opurtunity to write letters to the victims when they mimicked gunfire after you introduced yourself?

I had some middle school girls mocking the incident in the immediate aftermath. It did not last. I do not think it will come up again at this point. If it does, I would just ignore it - dont give them the satisfaction of getting a rise out of you - it is the only reason they would mock it in the first place.

Wow, not one of my students ever said anything about VA Tech. If they did, I guess I would just pull out a picture of the beheaded korean in Iraq! Shocked

I tell them that most humans are crazy and give examples of whites, blacks, Koreans, Japanese, Middle Eastern, etc. who have done bad, crazy things.

We all bleed red.

The week after the VA killings the expression 'lost his mind' came up in one lesson. I explained 'Last week, in America, the Gyopo, Cho Seong-hui "lost his mind!"', and they all understood what it meant.

That's as far as discussion of it ever came up in class.

I'm from Virginia and I have no problem telling people where I from. The only comment I ever get is "Virginia Tech Virginia?"

Its funny how Virginia, the state with the most history in the entire US is known only by that massacre.

I make it a point to say yes, but its also the birthplace of George Washington. I also say the CIA, FBI headquarters are located in Virginia, and about Jamestown.

I do this so that I can teach some people about Virginia other than the shootings.

I remember quite a few incidents of mocking the whole thing with 9/11 days after it happened. They weren't my students, thank dog.

The best way to handle it is to just leave it alone, or simply talk about it as far as you can. Getting upset over some kid mimicking having a gun is a waste of time.
